Yesterday’s high profile massacres across Egypt, which killed many hundreds of protesters and wounded several thousand others, is going to have untold consequences across public life in Egypt for years to come.
But in the immediate aftermath, the outrage from supporters of the ousted Morsi government is desperate for an outlet, and some rioters are turning on the nation’s Christian minority for no apparent reason as somebody to “retaliate” against.
Egypt’s Coptic Christian population is nearly 10 million strong, a large minority with an ancient presence in the nation. Politically they have tended to support secular factions, and after a lot of the secular groups jumped on the coup bandwagon last month, the Christians have found themselves as an easily targeted scapegoat.
Yet Egypt’s Christians weren’t involved in the coup itself, nor is there any indication they have benefited in any way from it. On the contrary, the military’s coup brought the military and Mubarak-era remnants into power, but the massacres it is carrying out in an attempt to retain power are hurting everyone else, directly or indirectly.
Correction: Because of a typo, the article previously put Egypt’s Coptic Christian population at “nearly 100 million.” Though exact figures are impossible to come by, most put the figure at 10-15% of Egypt’s population of 85 million, which ballparks it at 10 million.
There you have your answer, you street intellectual and among other anarchists, if you still think that who ever get the people's vote is given the green light by the people to do whatever, create an religious or ethnic or national animosity, you are nothing but what is known to history as a social worms, an imbeciles that lights on a already burning fire.
LOL, would you mind clarifying about how anarchists in our outlook are guided by voting patterns? Do you understand what an anarchist is, and why "voting" may not be exactly what anarchism is all about? Or does that concept escape you entirely?
Jason, from Wikipedia, "…the total number of Christians in Egypt is between 15% and 20% of a total population of 80 million Egyptians."

Please don't repeat the rubbish of zionist media. Why MB should attack churche? Al Qaeda and Salafis are UNDER CONTROL OF US/SAUDI ARABIA. The attack on Christians is part of the US/Israel policy of 'divide and rule' where use Salafis to frame Muslims. US/Israel use 'divide and rule' based on ODED YINON PROTOCOL to destabilize Egypt to partition like what they are doing in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Sudan. Egypt is part of the plan to erect "greater Israel". Those who do not understand this simple fact then cannot connect the dots. US/Nato invaded Iraq, Libya to leave soft partition behind for time being but they will come back to it. US/Israel are happy with the sitution in Syria that is not UNITED with the help of the CIA trained terrorists funded by Saudid Arabia $$$$. According to Oded Yinon Egypt must be partition to create 'christian' and muslim smaller states to turn them into WEAKER states not be able to defend themselves against Israel aggression. Eveyone in the region knows US/Israel plan and fight it. They know Obama is a liar and a zionist puppet, cannot be trusted
But people of the region know this plan,
100 million Coptic Christians in Egypt?? Good grief, Jason, there are only 84 million Egyptians!
As for the mobs targeting the Copts for no reason, that is just Muslims being Muslims.
Right, and no other groups have ever attacked minorities, especially Christians. We now how well Christians in Europe treated minorities, especially the Jewish one!
Whose interests might be served by driving Christians out? Vaguely remember this happened in Iraq/Syria to some extent? Minimizing Christian populations in the region could ease PR for future overt action, and ostensible bullying of them might be used as an excuse to 'intervene' somewhere. Assuming we got who the bullies were right, what was the motive? Facebook rumors? NED?
If one were to want to get the US physically involved all one has to do is start killing Christians and the religious fanatics in the US (Christian Taliban) will start demanding that the USG "protect" their fellow Xtians from persecution…at least that's the "reason" they will use to get the US boots on the ground – over there. You cannot have a global religious war (IslamoChristian) without clearly creating the demarcations between the sects upon which the meme will feed.
That system, which you are right to identify, has already broken down in Syria. The US can't play "defender of the Christians" when for their own reasons of safety the Syrian Christians have been strong supporters of Assad.
There are other things going on in Syria. I never understood why people like McCain and Graham were so adamant about supporting the "rebels" even though it is fairly obvious that the rebel ranks are rife with al-Qaeda fighters. Is this a method these old cold-war(riors) found that would poke the Russians, Putin specifically? Or is this because the Israelis want Assad gone and are short-sighted in who/what might replace him? Point is, for me, it had never made any sense why the US would support those whom we have waged war for the past 12 years to defeat. There has to be a goal that is being kept secret.
what was the motive?
Oded Yinon for "greater Israel"
