Russian Foreign Ministry officials have announced “emergency measures” today after a report that a Russian civilian passenger aircraft came under attack while flying over Syrian territory.
The plane was carrying 159 passengers and reportedly had two missiles shot at it by persons unknown. The pilot managed to avoid getting hit, and no one ended up harmed in the incident.
Still, the incident is troubling on multiple fronts, especially since unlike the Russian flights from Syria, which rebels have often threatened, this plane never landed in Syria, but was simply transporting tourists from an Egyptian resort city back to Russia.
Details are still scant on the incident, as Syrian aviation officials deny that they have any information on the incident, while Russian officials cited unnamed Syrian officials as the initial source.
