The Obama Administration’s claims that last week’s attack on the Benghazi Consulate was spontaneous seems to be falling apart tonight, as officials are now openly calling it a terrorist attack.
The attack, which ended with the death of the US Ambassador and several others, has been spun by the administration as a protest that got out of hand, despite witness reports that there was no protest at the site in the first place. Now the US also believes that a former Guantanamo Bay detainee may have been involved in the attack.
The suspect is Sufyan Ben Qumu, a former driver for Osama bin Laden who is now reportedly in a position of leadership for the Ansar al-Sharia Benghazi (ASB), the group blamed for the attack by the Libyan government. He was accused of working for a charity that was a front for al-Qaeda fundraising in the lead-up to 9/11, and was captured after the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001. In 2007 he was transferred by US officials to the Gadhafi regime, but was eventually released.
The administration has been juggling the narrative on Benghazi carefully for over a week now, trying to dismiss evidence of advanced notice and claims that the attack was pre-planned as rumors, while trying to defend the idea that Libya is stable in the wake of the US-imposed regime change last summer.
Officials have been desperate to protect this idea, because President Obama is emphasizing the “success” of the Libyan War as part of his reelection campaign. Even with the new evidence, officials say they can’t really say if the attack was “pre-planned” or if they just randomly took advantage of the “opportunity presented as the events unfolded.”
I find it hard to believe this. Why? Simple. Because if paints anyone who has been held at Gitmo as being responsible then it only serves to justify the horrendous conditions those men live, and recently die under, even giving credence to the camps very existence. Answer? Buuuulllsheeet!
Typical
Republicans says it's preplanned to make Obama look weak on foreign policy. The Libyan government say foreign forces did it probably to minimize their responsibility in what could be considered an act of war against the US. The Obama admin is in the defensive trying to prevent republicans from scoring points in this up coming election. And blaming Al-Qaeda could serve so Americans won't think Libyans are ungrateful and distracts from the poor conditions in Libya (weapons, militias, etc).
This debate on weather it's planned or not a planned attack wouldn't happen if the presidential election wasn't around the corner.
"The attack, which ended with the death of the US Ambassador and several others, has been spun by the administration as a protest that got out of hand, despite witness reports that there was no protest at the site in the first place"
There are witnesses who say there was a protest at the US consulate. Someone is trying to rewrite history by saying no protest took place to better support the attack was preplanned. Those in the Libyan government would want to deny protests took place since an attack on the US consulate could be taken as an act of war and the US has said it will hold people responsible and has sent marines, US warships, CIA agents, and drones into Libya. So the Libyan government has a strong reason to deny protests took place and blame it on foreigners from other countries.
Here is a witness who went to protest at the consulate: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/09/13/us-liby…
Another witness who went to the consulate with his friends but doesn't say why but probably to protest: http://observers.france24.com/content/20120912-ex…
History is being rewritten to better support their side of the story.
A direct result of the failure of the "press" to do what they are supposed to do – and haven't for a very long time, IMO – is that the Archons are able to manipulate the facts with impunity. Who knows whether a former detainee from the Pentagon's Cuban blackhole though I would not be surprised – I'd actually be surprised if more aren't manned by former detainees – we did such a good job of rehabilitating them – oh, wait, I mean torturing them. Can't imagine why they don't just go away and grow corn…
Anyway, the press…perhaps if they did what they were trained to do the Administration (and opponents) wouldn't be able to "create their own realities" and the American people might actually be aware – even if they don't care – of what is being done around the world in our name.
IF…but I'm not going to put much hope into that reality being changed anytime soon. I can continue to wait for that cataclysmic shift in the space/time continuum that it's going to take to get things into the real world.
My understanding is that several consulate workers were safely evacuated. Where are their stories of what happened? Are they being hidden away incomunicado by Obama? They were there, befoer and during the attack, and they know what really happened. How about some truth, for a change!
