Russia: Syrian Rebels Use ‘Tactics of Terror’

Foreign Ministry Urges Both Sides to Abide by Ceasefire

A new statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry urged both sides of Syria’s civil war to work harder on following through with the ceasefire, but made it clear that Russia blames the rebels more than the Assad regime for the violations.

The statement listed a number of attacks by rebels, noting that a number of the factions have adopted the “tactics of terror” in fighting against the government. In recent days, this has included assassinations and bombings.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich also faulted Western governments for arming and financing rebel groups, saying this was making the UN efforts at a negotiated settlement “significantly more difficult.”

The comments are in stark contrast to French statements on the matter, which insisted that the United Nations should prepare to invade Syria on the rebels’ behalf and install them as the new government. Needless to say, Russia will be expected to veto such an effort.
