Speaking today at a media conference in his office, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik demanded that the United States take unspecified “actions” against Mansour Ijaz, the Pakistani-American businessman who leaked evidence of the “coup memo.”
Ijaz reported that he was dictated the memo directly by Ambassador Husain Haqqani to deliver to Admiral Michael Mullen. The memo asked Mullen to help the Zardari government move against Pakistani military leaders, promising to replace them with more pro-US figures. Haqqani has since resigned over the allegations, and Mullen confirmed receiving the memo.
Malik accused Ijaz of wanting to damage the Pakistani government “for mysterious reasons” and said that the US was obliged to take action against him for “acting against US laws and passing false statements.”
Ijaz was formerly an analyst on Fox News, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). His father, Dr. Mujaddid Ijaz, was a top physicist in Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program.
He was on Fareed Zakaria's GPS show on Sunday and didn't answer Mr. Zakaria's repeated question of why he would make this public……. It's good for military and weakens the civil govt. further.
The memo only helps American war-mongers and those Pakistanis who want to establish their rule on the back of American tanks. Don't know who is involved and not sure if we will ever find out.
More Kabuki theater. Maybe, they can pin that one on Manning too and kill two birds with one stone.
