Lieberman’s Condition for Joining a Coalition: Destroy Hamas

Forming a Government May Mean Starting a New Gaza Invasion

Avigdor Lieberman’s Yisrael Beiteinu party didn’t do nearly as well in the election as previous polls suggested he would, but with a narrow margin between the top parties they may yet hold the key to forming a coalition government. He’s got a condition for any potential partner: regime change in Gaza and “to destroy Hamas.”

Lieberman has declared that his party will not join any government which would allow Hamas to continue to rule in the Gaza Strip, saying “we will not agree either directly or indirectly to Hamas staying in power. It doesn’t matter which government is established.”

Lieberman opposed the ceasefire that ended last month’s Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip saying the government had “prevented the IDF from finishing the job.” It would seem, as the outgoing government and Hamas both near a decision on a long-term ceasefire, the prospect for another war is greater than ever.
