In a press conference today, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni sought to downplay the deployment of US combat forces inside the country, insisting that the troops aren’t meant to engage in combat and shouldn’t even be called “troops” in the media.
“We shall never have troops coming to fight for us,” Museveni insisted. Indeed the US has insisted the troops are “advisers” and will only fight in “self defense.” Cabinet ministers said the deployment was vital to the ongoing war against the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).
But the US troops, some of which are already on the ground, are special operations forces, which have rarely shied away from direct combat missions. It seems unlikely that America would deploy its most battle-hardened combat forces into a zone and tell them not to fight.
And indeed, historically the use of special operations “advisers” as the first stage of an escalating military commitment is well documented. Even major wars like Vietnam originally started with a small number of such advisers deployed in what was meant to be a “non-combat” role.
Advisers? Puh..leeze!!! That lying dog and pony show has been played to Hell and back.
Museveni would be naive to the point of absurdity.
Just like in Vietnam. Just "advisers"…at first.
So is there anybody out there who actually thinks Vietnam was a good idea? They keep repeating the formula as if it had been a total hoot.
Museveni is far too stupid to figure out that this is a deal with Lucifer. He will meet the same fate as most third world dictators who have sold their country and list is long Marcos,Shah and countless others. Being the hired thug for the CIA in Central & East Africa has a very limited shelf life and when it ends, it will end badly.
I always remember the words of the Ugandan foreign minister after their civil war: "Thank god no one was interested – it would have been much bloodier."
As others point out, Musaveni is yet another example of well known colonial/imperial manipulation by the US.
For Americans, perhaps more important is to ask why our "elite" is determined to bankrupt the country and end democracy in America in order to play at being "imperial masters of the universe". They are as stupid and destined to fail as Musaveni – BUT it will be average Americans that pay (are already paying) the biggest price for their stupidity.
This is just great- Obama can't get us out of Afghanistan (or, apparently, Iraq) and can't bring any real victory in Libya or defeat ANY of our opponents… so what does he do? Of course, the only logical thing- set the stage for another war tailor-made for TV.
Why Uganda- why now? Somebody's playing the race card, and playing it hard and fast. We didn't do anything to stop the horrors of black-on-black violence in Rwanda years ago, we haven't done anything to stop the violence being done to blacks in Libya now, and Obama desperately needs to do something to show his voter base- the black community in America- that he's really 'one of them' and a champion for blacks the world over. Hence, our Uganda adventure- little to no danger to US interests, an area we want bases in anyway, and smack in the middle of (forgive the term) the 'hood. The bonus comes when our 'advisors' are attacked the first time; that gives the US an excuse for pouring troops and material into the area for 'security'.
I'd hate to be one of the 'advisors' stuck over there, knowing that a) it's for no reason other than domestic political theater for a failed US President, and b) I was being used as disposable bait for the purposes of starting another war.
It almost goes without saying that they don't give a sh!t about the Ugandan people. It's the same hackneyed formula of 3rd world domination we've employed everywhere else. The puppet dictator doesn't seem to be in danger of trying to cut or at least disentangle his strings, so I'm wondering what the point of this war is other that a massive expansion of AfriCom. Uganda doesn't seem to be drowning in valuable resources that I'm aware of.
I was wrong, apparently Uganda has oil. This was linked in an earlier blog entry I missed: http://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News…
Once they created Africom you just knew it wouldn't be too long before they would find a "need" for American troops there. If the pentagon created Antarticacom, somebody would send American troops there to keep an eye on those penguins. Anything to keep the money flowing….
“is a good use of our military.” How does combatting a criminal gang [on steroids perhaps] work out as the national defense of the U.S? "Good" is such a malleable observation. To me it seems a waste of time-personnel-resources. And what is the ROI? What plausible U.S. national interest is being served here? My inner cynic wonders what Ugandan natural resources are being protected for Wall Street? I am unconvinced by humanitarian arguments. The current Ugandan government seems to be catering to the worst right wing American anti-gay bigotry. From Wiki: Uganda's proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill (also known as the "Kill the Gays Bill")[1][2][3], if enacted, would broaden the criminalisation of same-sex relations by introducing the death penalty for people who have previous convictions, are HIV-positive, or engage in sexual acts with people of the same sex or for adults who do so with those under 18 years of age.[note 1] The bill also includes provisions for Ugandans who engage in same-sex sexual relations outside of Uganda, asserting that they may be extradited for punishment back to Uganda, and includes penalties for individuals, companies, media organisations, or non-governmental organisations that support LGBT rights. Homophobia is rampant in Uganda and is thought to have been one of the causes of the bill. [Uganda Anti-Homosexuality Bill] Perhaps the Warren connection provides an explanation for this otherwise mysterious intervention. “American evangelicals such as Scott Lively and California pastor Rick Warren have a history of involvement in Uganda where they focus their missionary work.”
first it starts with the "advisors"…until the forces we back start losing, and before ya know it, Africom base moves from Stuttgart to Uganda…someone's advisors apparently told him all in a rush how GW neglected Latin America and Africa in his haste to destroy Iraq…therefore letting the Chinese and their "soft-power" make massive headway into these regions
"“We shall never have troops coming to fight for us,” Museveni insisted."<.i>
Uhhh…Yoweri…you'll do as you're told.

They WON'T be fighting? That's what they all say.
Just wait, the only blacks they know played basketball. They'' have those Jdams flattening the jungle in no time a-tall! But they'll screw it up, just like in the jungles o' Veetnam.
Maybe they'll get eaten. That would mobilize Amurrica.
