Former Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Ati al-Obeidi, who has been a foreign envoy for the Gadhafi regime over the past several weeks, was in Greece on Sunday discussing a possible “solution” to the ongoing war.
Obeidi had previously headed a delegation headed overseas to proclaim the regime’s willingness to hold discussions with the East Libyan rebels. Today it appears that the notion of a rapprochement was not so much on the agenda as a ceasefire.
Both sides have raised the prospect of ceasefires several times over the past week, but neither has accepted the other’s offer and both seem to be jockeying for position in what seems soon to be an international border between East Libya and Gadhafian Libya.
Indeed, while the fighting continues it doesn’t appear that either side is making much in the way of gains anymore, and the clashes are more out of habit than any serious hope of pushing the other side back. Today’s efforts may be just the latest indication that the regime is also becoming resigned to the impending stalemate.
Golly, the "solution" for Obeidi must certainly be obvious. All that Mooey MUST do is sign over all the Libyan oil interests and production facilities and keep inside that Tripoli "no-fly zone", and promise 'scouts honor' to never oh no never be a rascally bad boy ever again and do not now or ever make any waves about Libyan oil being exploited by western European/US oil interests. Cause you know, at BP/DutchRoyalShell/Chevron/ad infinitum, oil is OUR business our only business and governments had, by GOD, better stay outta our way!
If the United States government was serious about its concerns for civilians in Libya, they would annouce thier immediate support for a ceasefire, and a negotiated end to the war. This war is not about innocent Libyans being killed , however, it is about oil and bases. I still hope sanity will trump oil and bases, but I am becoming less and less hopeful.
