Though the Libyan protest movement has been very outspoken in the main in its opposition to foreign military operations, the continued reports of fighting coupled with the occasional report of some unnamed rebel wishing the US was occupying the country has left open the question of exactly what the US military is going to do.
Indeed, top officials continue to insist that they are mulling different options for how to use military force against Libya, and while some (like Defense Secretary Robert Gates) are warning that it might be hasty, more troops and warships continue to be moved into the area.
Which seems, in and of itself, to make the possibility of a US invasion greater. After all, with a unit of US Marines deployed to Greece now just in case, the task of starting such an invasion becomes all the easier.
But if the US does it, indications are they’ll likely be doing so mostly alone. German FM Guido Westerwelle insisted Germany views a military occupation of Libya as “very counterproductive” while Italian officials absolutely ruled out any military role, citing lingering resentment from their multi-decade occupation in the early 20th century.
What a great idea. Invading other nations has worked out so well for us here lately that we just gotta go out and get ourselves another. What's funny is Gates knows we're about to step into a giant pile of steaming…intervention, so now he's busy covering his posterior. Gotta land that sweet think tank/consulting/speaking gig afterwards, right?
US military intervention would be a disaster: the country is too huge for an effective No-Fly Zone, and US Marines would do nothing except capture and hold the oil installations. Libyans need to work this out for themselves; world opinion supports the rebels.
Let them capture all oil fields. Libyans got nothing to lose more than they lost for 42 years. I am positively sure they will not throw roses on the American troops. They know very well wherever American land they corrupt the place with their arrogance. I have no doubt that the Libyans will resent the American and will fight back, hence, the country is so huge and full of dunes which will help the locals to camouflage themselves.
"INVADE LIBYA!" Oh yeah, another brilliant idea from the folk that gave us the Afghaniscam/Iraq genocide.
Hmmm, must lend credence to the axiom that a moran is incapable of learning from past mistakes. Oh yeah…
Gates has supposedly said, "Any future Secretary of Defense who encourages an invasion in the Middle East should have his head examined". Whether or not Gates will need his own head examined remains to be seen.
Escalation is invariably the name of the US/Israeli game. It will unite the Lybians (and the rest of the ASrab world) even more. They will have TWO enemies to confront and to get rid of.
Invade yet another muslim country. Brilliant!
America desperately needs a 'regime change' – we need to rid ourselves of the INSANE 'leaders' we have in the White House, in the Congress, in the Pentagon.
Yes – invade Libya – what insanity!
Stay the hell out! Let the Egyptians come to the aid of their fellow revolutionaries.
With Obama uttering the ritualistic incantations over Ghadafi's "legitimacy," the stage is being set for yet another FedGov military adventure. Interesting news about the FedGov naval infantry units suddenly appearing in Greece.
We must make sure that whole "Islamic Emirate of Bengahzi" idea doesn't spread to the rest of Libya. Or maybe we just like invading other countries.
Which arm of the proganda machine keeps repeating this bs-"the occasional report of some unnamed rebel wishing the US was occupying the country".
Get the Germans to do it! After all, they've occupied the country once before! Surely they still have their old maps.
This time, though, they'll be sure to secure Malta on their way over.
