The Obama Administration appears to be backing significantly off of its previous demands for immediate action in Egypt, suggesting that Mubarak’s promise not to run for an additional term and appointment of Omar Suleiman as a Vice President amounted to “monumental changes.”
Indeed, Press Secretary Robert Gibbs appeared entirely satisfied with the Egyptian dictatorship’s response so far, and instead took the opposition to task for not being willing to support the “orderly transition” of power.
Gibbs also expressed concern that the protesters were doing so much damage that they might ruin the chances for a global economic turnaround, and insisted that the US was continuing to “monitor” the situation.
Gibbs also confirmed that despite US pledges to “reach out” to large numbers of groups involved in the protests they had explicitly not done so with the Muslim Brotherhood, warning that even though the US did not have the power to dictate future leaders a group had to have “a commitment to something larger than themselves” to be involved in the election process.
He also demanded that the protesters accept all the existing treaties of the Mubarak government, presumably referring to calls to scrap the Israel treaty for its onerous restrictions on travel in Sinai. He insisted all the treaties Mubarak had made were made on behalf of the Egyptian people and those people had a responsibility to abide by them.
Nobody seriously believed that American tyrant will support the will of Egyptian subjects. Kudos to the Empire of terror on letting those yearning for Liberty that they do not respect the will and the voice of the people. Resistance is the only way to Liberty, Freedom Independence and Dignity.
The gloating is short-sighted. In the world of instant communications, this newly triumphant posture will make quite an impression. Can Obama's administration enumerate any "transition" offered so far? "Studying" constitutional reform? Wow, what a monumental change! Any other? Lifting the state of "emergency" that lasted for thirty years? Perhaps, maybe, at some future date, "when the conditions allow". A monumental change, indeed. Under "emergency" provisions hardly anybody can run for elected office unless approved by the regime. Any other "monumental" changes? As for the damage to the economy, the regime has damaged it for the last thirty years, and it will take decades to recover should the regime exit today. Putting the blame on the uprising for the economy — the hight of folly. This goating is not only short-sighted. It may be also short-lived. What is Plan C?
I am sure the demonstrators are worried about the damage to global economics. Gibbs, ever on the alert.
Monumental changes. ROFL! The disconnect with these people is legendary. The poor Egyptians have got the same exact kind of change we got when we traded Bush for Obama.
Even criminals have sprit de corps.
The CIA will merely install another brutal dictator in Egypt who is friendly to the US and to Israel.
The US is totally opposed to 'freedom' and 'democracy' in the rest of the world when the will of the people is opposed to US interests.
Of course, freedom and democracy are slowly being destroyed right here in America!
Yes! That's it Mr. press secretary, – “a commitment to something larger than themselves”. All praises be unto our Lords and Masters in Washington. (Peace be unto them)
