Mastercard’s website has been suffering severe problems off and on for the better part of the day, and performance tracker Netcraft.com showed the site entirely down for much of the early morning after a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.
A group calling itself Operation Payback has taken credit for the attack, saying it was retaliation for Mastercard’s decision to block WikiLeaks from receiving donations through their credit card service.
Operation Payback has been around for awhile, launching attacks against pro-copyright groups like the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), but has since moved on to what they refer to as “Operation Avenge Assange,” targeting groups that have moved against WikiLeaks. They reportedly also attacked the Swedish prosecutor’s website earlier today.
According to netcraft, the DDoS attacks by the organization are somewhat different, as while most such groups use botnets resulting from the distrubution of malware to seize control of unaware peoples’ computers to launch their attacks, Operation Payback relies entirely on what it calls a “Low Orbit Ion Cannon,” a voluntary botnet that actually involves people voluntarily installing the software on their systems to help them with their strikes.
WikiLeaks itself has been under attack by a botnet since it began releasing the State Department’s cables, with a self-described “patriot” claiming credit for the attacks as a demonstration of his nationalism. It seems the tactic is now going both ways, however, and the battle over the whistleblowers’ right to publish is expanding into tit-for-tat cyberattacks by activists on either side.
Antiwar.com condemns these cyberattacks. Such attacks violate property and privacy rights and will only lead to an escalation of such attacks on both sides.
I too don't condone an attack. However, who started the first attach was the offender and the second one was the defender because he never turned his other cheek to the first attacker (Jester).

bring it on! and let see which side everyone really is on.
There's a lot of disagreement on this issue and I totally get it. It's a "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander" sort of thing. But we're the side that's for freedom of information here, isn't knocking down websites going to sort of muddle the message?
hey i get it that its your only medium. and im not taking issue with your stance.
im just saying i don't really care.
its very clear that the world is becoming two great classes(not exactly as marx intended) those who are subjected to capricious laws and those who are completely exempt.
down with the oligarchy!
After all what’s the point of freedom and responsibility and opportunity if you are denied such things only to have the world figured out and sold to you in convenient episodes that so often serve to conveniently serve the indoctrinated/vested power bases and their infomercial packages?
After all is it really all about freedom as Mastercard so often boasts in its commercials? I wonder…
Shame about Visa too…

I’m with you Paul. I wonder about the motives of this site.
This site says nothing about today being the anniversary of John Lennons death. And John Lennon was as antiwar as a guy could get. He was one of the greatest peace activists that ever lived.
This site also doesn’t mention the news released today about China coming out with their own version of a Nobel Peace Prize.
It’s called the “Confucious Peace Prize”.
Turns out China doesn’t think it’s right for “the west” (people who have done nothing but wage war for hundreds of years) to teach the world about peace.
"I wonder about the motives of this site."
i don't recall saying anything of the sort
Wars in Ira and Afghanistan: over one trillion dollars
CIA renditions and tortures: International credibility
Exposure due to Wikileaks: priceless
For everything else there's Mastercard
Brilliant JLS!
lol@JLS
MasterTard can suck it!
It is becoming quite EVIDENT, that the creation of non-human "persons" , especially CORPORATIONS heavily protected by law, leads to the diminishing and thinning out of human rights. Mostly only corporations have the economic possibility to make a legal fight for its own rights.
Rights was originally given to, and written down in constitutions for living human beings. Real persons. But at some time it was found a good thing for economic development to create a fiction of legal entities as "persons". Some forms of bigger ventures require e.g. a lot of persons working together in long-term projects. At the same time giving them limited econommic responsibilities, so as to ease the creation of more.. So that was the creation of those living deads that has endless and ever more economic greed as their primary raison d'être. Culminating with the biggest monsters of them all: The corporations.
They are, from a governmental view, BETTER than humans in the respect of being more easy to make into conformity. The government sits on the legal management of their existence and possibilities, and unlike humans, they only care for money, and thus is much more easy to manipulate than real living persons, to name just one thing.
So in that way one gets a society where completely cynical and ruthless types of "persons" with enormous wealth compared to living persons, also competes with them on the market. Effectively stopping personal competition, thus FORCING the real persons to become employees at some of the living deads' activities. So we have a spectacle of Dracula (government), vampires (corporations) and human beings at the very bottom of existence.
The Founding Fathers of the USA invented checks and balances. But that has proven to be an illusion. The government NEEDS it, and again and again prefers upholding that "order" , the system of conformity and inequality, and encourages it actively. In fact tries to spread it to every corner of the earth. But of course it needs, like the vampires does too, that real life is present in this theater of mobid fakes, thus a spinned reality of comfort and rights and freedom and the happiness of some Disneyland or Las Vegas is presented to the dumbed down persons. Free slaves!
At some time living people are going to change that system. The time should logically come when most people find little reward, and much annoyance in that form of life. And since the latter decenniums have seen a complete stop in economic development for real persons, and a heavy redistribution in favour of vampire leaders vs. all living personsy, this time will probably come shortly.
A Renaissance! A new demand for human respect! I wonder if the recent enormous raise of vampire leaders' salaries and special bonuses could be the apprehended danger of some reversal. So that brings forth the need to give them the possibility for grab the money and run away before the music stops.
An example of change:
No company will be allowed to present a big book of requirements to the customer on the internet. No, It will become obliged to accept, that if It wants a special agreement, It PAYS the customer Up FRONT for his time in studying and evaluating the proposition. Say 600 hours paid in advance to the customer – around 1,200 USD, BEFORE the customer decides if he will accept the simple UPDATE of an already installed package . Or else It will just have to rely on, like REAL persons on the REALLY free market of living persons, that the customer is supposed to be lawful, and if not, It bears the costs for getting retribution eventually. As it is today, billions of humans are waisting ar parts of their life on clicking like robots to non-living things on the internet, and this idiocy is spreading because it is free (today) and assists the supremacy of the vampires.
———————
And the present problem with the corporations (vampires) effectively assisting unlawful coercion?
They should in a reformed society be harshly PUNISHED because at the outset its existence should become null and void, if they can not document they have PROOF from a court order that they HAVE TO stop their service for him.
Today they reverse that, by claiming that it MIGHT be so. But they must PROVE it themselves. They have adopted the barely disguised criminal habits from the government, which most of all needs to be reversed. Since this does not happen, it is another PROOF that the present regime is dysfunctional, to put it politely.
.
Liberty loving peoples have a duty and obligation to DEFEND values they hold dear, operation Payback is reaction to actions by individual and corporate tyrants from the new Evil Empire. Resist Evil!
Jason,
No. It’s not going to “muddle the message”.
That’s the problem with pacifism and the Antiwar community in general. They think they can fight depraved, serial-killers using hugs as a weapon.
