The Senate on Thursday passed a bill by voice vote that would suspend military aid to Azerbaijan for two years following Baku’s takeover of Nagorno-Karabakh, which pushed over 100,000 ethnic Armenians out of the territory.
The Armenian Protection Act of 2023 would prohibit the president from issuing a waiver that allows the US to provide Azerbaijan with military assistance. US aid to Azerbaijan was banned by Section 907 of the 1992 Freedom Support Act, which was passed during the first Nagorno-Karabakh war.
The US started issuing the waiver in 2002 to provide Azerbaijan with military aid and has been under pressure since the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war to cut Baku off. President Biden issued the Section 907 waiver in 2022 but has not so far in 2023.
According to POLITICO, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Congress in October that the Biden administration was not planning to renew the waiver for Azerbaijan. He also said the US expected to see Azerbaijan invade Armenia to create a corridor between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an Azeri enclave that borders Armenia, Iran, and Turkey.
The Armenian Protection Act has a good chance of passing through the House as Congress has been increasingly critical of US aid to Azerbaijan. The Senate version of the bill was introduced by Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) and received eight co-sponsors, including four Republicans and four Democrats.
Wait a minute here, so this ethnic cleansing is bad, Gaza ethnic cleansing good?? The psychos in DC aren’t even trying to present the facade of a normal foreign policy in the world.
Yet the motherf&ckers keep sending weapons to Israel. More than 13,000 Palestinians have been murdered, with 5,500 children killed. The hospital that was alleged to be a “base of operations” for Hamas (it wasn’t) evacuated 31 babies. There were 39. They died before they could be evacuated. Babies! Dead! My grief and my rage are off the charts. Biden’s approval rating is at 40%. I am shocked that it is not lower. First the proxy war which could have ended early last year, but negotiations were stopped, now this nightmare that he is feeding. I am such an *sshole. I voted for Biden. Congress is no better. I don’t see any bills to cut off the funds and the weapons. Could it be that the members of congress fear AIPAC and the MIC that much.
They do, look at what is happening to Elon Musk. Some of this is self inflicted, they accept campaign money from nefarious groups then get muzzled later.
It’s pretty obvious that Nagorno-Karabakh lies within Azerbaijan. The expulsion of Armenians from that territory is understandable considering the friction between Armenia and Azerbaijan (which is catnip to US neoconservatives like Blinken). And since Blinken predicts more conflict between the two countries, you can expect the US to make it happen. Not in the interest of Armenia, but just to keep a pot boiling on the Russian border.
Rybar (Russian military blogger) is saying Armenia is giving Tochka-U ballistic missiles to Ukraine. Sounds like “Russia’s NATO” military alliance (CSTO) is falling apart. Maybe Putin should’ve come to the aid of Armenia (its ally) in their last dust-up with Azerbaijan!
Armenia will look to the west now. Was Victoria Nuland involved in this too? Drink!
And how long Senate suspend military air to Armenia if it takes over West Azerbaijan…?!
The proof is here. It was under US pressure that Armenia gave up Nagorno-Karabhak. Armenia’s leadership has places all their trust into US power, and became helpless. When US decided that N-K Gordian knot was impissible to solve without Russian help, and the utterly dependent Pashinyan became dependent on Russia for N-K security, Something drastic had to hapoen. Not only did Russia secure agreement with Azerbaijan for the enclave’s security, but bith Russia and Turkey became partners in Azerbaijan . security.
So, the only solution to the conundrum was to have Armenia sacrifice N-K, and Azerbaijan in debts to US. The well known business links to Israel were to be strenghtened, and US gain upper hand in Azerbaijan.
Only Armenian sacrifice was guaranteed sacrifice, US getting inroads into Azerbaijan are now slimmer than ever. The businesses that were bought and paid for were supposed to agitate against Aliev. Azerbaijan with Turkey and Russia support was not an easy color revolution target.
Now, for the forseiable future — it will not happen. Israel’s attrocities in Gaza have for generations damaged any ties to Israel, and any trust in US.
The only asset Armenia has for US — is access to Iran’s border. Armenia stubbornly did not allow for the transit corridor to Azerbaijan exclave on Turkish bordet, while demanding corridor for Nagorno-Karabakh. Now, Armenia has this only ace to offer to US,
Will this be a place bought and paid for Yerevan would be willing to provoke a conflict? Might be a revenge for Yerevan’s pointless loss of N-K, a sukob to involve America on Azeri-Iranian bordet?
At this point — if Yerevan has any of its freedom of decision left m, it woukd be WISE to stay away from geopolitical games. So far, they failed to protect their interests. And are left at the nercy of hegmon at the time hegemon is universaly condemned for its role in Gaza genocide. As time goes on — Israel has irreparably damaged US in most parts of the globe.
Armenia’s timing could not have been worse.
