The Biden administration has quietly struck a deal with Ecuador to deploy troops to the country and patrol the waters off its coast to combat drug cartels, the Washington Examiner reported on Friday.
Select members of Congress were informed of the agreements on Wednesday during a closed-door briefing with Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, who was in Washington to sign the deals.
The State Department did not publicize the agreements, but a State Department official confirmed the deals were signed in comments to the Examiner. The maritime deal will allow the US Coast Guard to patrol waters off Ecuador’s coast, an area where Colombian cartels transport cocaine.
The second agreement outlines the terms by which the US troops could be deployed to Ecuador, known as a status of forces agreement. The details of the agreement are not known, and it’s also unclear if it means a US troop deployment is imminent.
“That doesn’t mean we’re doing it, but it means we can, and it means that they’re making a very clear signal to us that they want more us involved,” said Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), an ultra-hawk who favors military intervention against drug cartels.
Earlier this year, Crenshaw introduced a bill that would authorize the president to use military force against “those responsible for trafficking fentanyl or a fentanyl-related substance into the United States or carrying out other related activities that cause regional destabilization in the Western Hemisphere.”
Miss the old cocaine days… A long, long time ago…
Surely you must be joking. More like to ensure, the government isn’t toppled.
This is a replay of the same bullshit we have heard before. The rationale could be put into a form, with a few fill-in-the-blank lines.
Yes, but just think of all the refugees we’ll get for NYC.
The US lost its toe-hold in Columbia and is attempting to maintain a back door to its claimed south American back yard in Ecuador,
It would be interesting to have a new US form of government that put people first. How? Start with writing in friends for every federal office this next election cycle.
So US troops are going to Ecuador to combat drug trade from going to Peru? Unless Colombians are using the Galapagos Islands in their transportation route to the USA, how is patrolling Ecuadorian waters going to interdict the Colombian/US drug trade?
Never address the demand because American’s only do drugs because of cartels.
One thing is for sure once the yanks get into Ecuador they won`t be leaving any time soon even when asked to leave , ask the Iraq`s
Astonishing. Neither our nation nor that of Ecuador seems to have been asked. This is Biden’s panicking reaction to “Bomb Mexico”. Ah, yes, there is an election coming up. What a coward!
Does the SFA allow criminal US soldiers to be arrested and indicted by Ecuadorian prosecutors or are they “out of reach”? Probably “out of reach”. That issue has always resulted in huge problems for our governments. For that reason, Obama had to take our troops hurriedly out of Iraq. And why are we The People not informed of the content of this SFA?
And the authoritarian Biden is the chief spouter of baloney about US “democracy.”
Somehow US Coastguard snooping around faraway countries shores cannot fulfill this mission but US troops can…!
Who’s next?
It’s estimated China is responsible for over 90 percent of illicit fentanyl found in the United States.
W0W…!!!! Don Bacon returns after what seemed a long absence. He got attacked and so many bad reviews that he morphed into Don Julio and Lemonie Alpaca to spew he’s vitriol, nonsense and lies like accusing Bianca of posting while drunk without an example of any such sloppy thinking or writing. He is not a very nice or intelligent fellow! The kind a bum who picks on women and worst..!!!
Some Marines won’t be able to go to Ecuador, there’s a cammie shortage in the Marine Corps– here
I don’t know what to comment on this, but doesn’t the U.S have its hooks in enough countries already and does it really need more. It seems to me that Equador is the type of country that is always on the make for more free money from wealthier states, and I believe they are after out money, and that they really don’t have anything to offer that we need or can’t get else where. I Spent a week there in Monsanta or some such hippy beach town and experienced their wonderful shrimp and black conch ceviche which was completely beyond compare. Just their seafood alone made my time there with my daughter there worthwhile.
Also the accommodation we stayed in was owned by David Bellas who was a Cuban. On Sunday mornings he would be down in the lobby watching the U.S. news shows like Meet The Press, This Week with ??? and Face the Nation. As I remember it the Iraq war was just getting started and the “Great War On Terror was well underway. He and I would argue like cats and dogs about American foreign policy. He was a full on supporter of American hegemony and its muscular interventions and war on terror excesses and I hated all the wars invasions and renditions and torture. He gave me a copy of the book he had written and published: “The Cuban Gambit,” Here is the Amazon blurb on his book:
“During Fidel Castro’s fight to overthrow the dictator Fulgencio Batista, the Cold War was at its hottest point. What Castro and the rest of the world did not know was that he had a very powerful ally in the CIA-Chief Allen Dulles. In a desperate move, Dulles devised a plan to use Cuba as bait for the USSR. If his plans succeeded, Castro would become a villain to the rest of America. In The Cuban Gambit, author David Bellas shares the account of his experiences in the Cuban revolution. Bellas holds the strong conviction that CIA intervention rendered Cuba a pawn to eradicate the Communist threat to democracy. Through his unique point of view, Bellas asks difficult questions that need to be answered.Bellas portrays his struggles as a college student for his country’s liberation from Batista’s dictatorship, then fighting against Castro’s Soviet-backed Communist revolution, participating in the ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion, and subsequently becoming POW in Castro’s Cuban prisons. It took decades for the U.S. government to come clean about its October missile concessions during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962. But how long will it take before America admits the truth about The Cuban Gambit? His book is for sale there at Amazon….
