On Friday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that Russia wasn’t threatening anyone with nuclear weapons and said Moscow doesn’t want a direct conflict with the US and NATO.
“We are not threatening anyone with nuclear weapons,” Ryabkov said. “The criteria for their use are outlined in Russia’s military doctrine.”
Russia’s doctrine is that it could use nuclear weapons if it is facing an “existential threat,” and Russian officials have made clear throughout the current war in Ukraine that this is still the policy.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that Moscow could use nuclear weapons to defend its “territorial integrity.” While his comments were a more explicit warning, it still falls in line with the doctrine.
But Russian territory is set to expand into Ukraine after referendums that are being held in the Donbas, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine is planning to launch more counter-offensives against these territories using weapons and intelligence provided by the US and other NATO countries.
Ryabkov said that it’s not in Russia’s interest to be in a direct conflict with the US and NATO. “A face-off with the United States and NATO, which is fraught with an open armed conflict, is not in our interests,” he said.
“We hope that the Biden administration understands the risks of uncontrolled escalation of the conflict in Ukraine, given the repeated statements by their officials that they don’t plan to send American servicemen to Ukraine,” Ryabkov added.
President Biden has repeatedly stated that he won’t send US troops into Ukraine to fight Russia, although there is a CIA presence on the ground, according to a report from The New York Times that was published in June. The report also said special operations forces from Britain, France, Canada, and Lithuania are on the ground in Ukraine.
Russia’s best route to a win might be to let the current US sanctions drag on until the blowback does their work for them. In that case, any further escalation would be a US tactic to escape the dead end it has created.
I have a better route to win for Putin:
Announce that all four regions voted to stay with Ukraine then pull his mediocre Army back to Russia. He’ll tell the Russians that he tried to help the separatists but they rejected the help. The separatists will be blamed for all the bloodshed and Putin will be praised as a National Hero. Win, win.
And what if all four regions voted to be annexed to Russia? Would you have Putin tell a lie to escape an escalated war?
Ukraine is crawling with CIA. And more.
Russia says not threatening anyone with nukes after threatening everyone with nukes multiple times.
The Kremlin telling me I didn’t hear what i heard. You cannot make this stuff up.
not threatening, the US/NATO is threatening. Russia is defending herself
Defending herself by going Hitler on Ukraine because we all know, Ukraine had invaded Russia and was planning to annex the land. Got you.
Is that why we went Hitler on Serbia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Afghanistan?
“….although there is a CIA presence on the ground, according to a report from The New York Times that was published in June. The report also said special operations forces from Britain, France, Canada, and Lithuania are on the ground in Ukraine…..”
perhaps it will be time to get rid of all the foreign mercenaries and the foreign special operations forces in the next phase of the Russian smo in the Ukraine.
IF they are serious about de-militarization and de-nazification in the whole country
I take that you are not American. Hoping for our allies to die.
Well, I hope those mercenaries and Ukrainians finish up the second phase of this WAR and I hope you get mobilized soon.
BTW, Russia is not serious about De-militarizing and De-Nazifying Ukraine. It was all BS. Didn’t you get the memo?
For starters, Russia just released 215 Azov Battalion prisoners (conveniently known by you people as Neo Nazis) in a prisoner exchange for 1 Russian oligarch. Russians who bought on the narrative are furious now. So much for the Nazi BS threat.
is someone paying you to post misinformation?
Only misinformation if it contradicts the Kremlin.
Tell me what part of this is misinformation.
Take the liberty of looking at the Reuters story on it, that I posted the website to, above. That will shatter your “confirmation biases”
I did, and you corroborated my point. 215 of Azov Nazis were released. So thanks again. If I left information out is because yesterday, I shared the link. Bottom line is, they were released in exchange for one oligarch.
The so called NAZIS were released. Isn’t that the reason Russia invaded? De-Nazification? Whatever happened to that. I know what happened. It was all BS>.
Wrong again (as usual): https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-releases-10-foreigners-captured-ukraine-after-saudi-mediation-riyadh-2022-09-21/
Wrong?
You just sent me an article that confirms what I just said. Thanks.
Again, what part of that is misinformation?
One wealthy opposition political figure and 54 others. You see, exchanges don’t include just POWs or oligarchs but you conveniently left out “the others”.
“They include Lieutenant Colonel Denys Prokopenko, commander of the Azov battalion that did much of the fighting, and his deputy, Svyatoslav Palamar. Also freed was Serhiy Volynsky, the commander of the 36th Marine Brigade.”
How does this support your point?
I have read word for word what Putin said, and this misrepresents his statement.
He said, after noting that Ukraine is bombing the Zaporishzhia power plant (which even Western media now have admitted but as a footnote to sweep under the rug), that U.S. officials have talked about using “WMDs”, including nuclear weapons, against Russia. Putin said that if they did so, then Russia would defend itself.
That shouldn’t be hard to include in an article about the subject. Yet I see it nowhere. Because almost no one who talks about it actually read his statement. Alexis Mercouris from the Duran did, however. His YouTube channel is indispensible. Likewise TheNewAtlas on YouTube.
Why can’t you say Putin said it. You guys sound so desperate. You are dissecting and interpreting every word he’s said in his Nuke Threat speeches in an attempt to find something different. This is like Trump supporters, always making up excuses for the stupid things he said.
Putin, Medvedev, and his people have been making threats for months. Nothing new. Accept it and move on. I know he is your savior but he is no saint.
DJ:
Try not to be so dogmatic… Putin is no ones idea of a savior nor is he a madman either…
Hey, that’s sexist!!! “You guys”? What about the gals? Ross Perot got hammered for saying “You people”.
With no good phrase for the plural of ‘you,’ the plural term ‘guys’ ended up evolving into the colloquial alternative to refer to a group of people, regardless of whether group members are male or female.
How do I know if you are a dude or a gal?
By the way, I’m a feminist.
So did the use of the term “people”, but that didn’t stop the persecution of Perot.
Well, that explains your general low level of IQ.
Putin:
“If the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will without doubt use all available means to protect Russia and our people — this is not a bluff,” Putin said in a televised address.
“The citizens of Russia can rest assured that the territorial integrity of our Motherland, our independence, and freedom will be defended — I repeat — by all the systems available to us. Those who are using nuclear blackmail against us should know that the weathervane can turn around,” he said.
This news has been ignored here by Russian supporters. But I’ll keep it fresh:
Russia released last week 215 highly dangerous Azov fighters a.k.a Neo Nazis. The very “reason” they went to WAR for.
Let that sink in.
Prisoner exchange – not one-sided, but you knew that and left that salient fact out.
Yes, it was a prisoner exchange.
How many Russian POWs did the Russians get in exchange for those dangerous Nazis?
Answer: Zero. They got one wealthy oligarch. I wonder if Russian troops are truly feeling the emotional warmth of their leaders’ concern for their well-being?
I could not have said it better.
Maybe putin doesn’t like soldiers who are captured either .. ;?)
Hope you and yours are staying clear of the storm Thomas.
It’s supposed to come right over my house here in a couple of days. But they seem uncertain about that, or about its strength. Thanks for the best wishes.
Personally, I like hurricanes better than tornadoes or earthquakes, because you get several days’ notice to get ready or get out.
On the other hand, you also get several days of worry. I’ve been cutting up a fallen oak on our lot today so that we’ll have firewood to cook with if the power’s out for several days (with Irma, I think it was five days, and we also had trees call on our trailer and end up in the kitchen).
If I’m gone for a day or two, you’ll know why. I keep meaning to buy a generator and never get around to it.
One wealthy opposition political figure and 54 others. You see, exchanges don’t include just POWs.
In exchange, Ukraine sent back 55 Russians and pro-Moscow Ukrainians and Viktor Medvedchuk, the leader of a banned pro-Russian party who was facing treason charges.
Nice try Rightstermeister.
You are desperately looking for a good excuse when there’s none. Go complain to the Kremlin. They are the ones who made that deal. Not me.
hey there donny boy, everyone knows you are a troll. why not stick to AP or CNN comments section in the future, or the entire MSM!
Yep, Being a minority here makes me a troll.
And if everybody knows I’m a troll, that’s fine. I can live with that.
Just block him … it’s easy and fun!
Block me and the West MSM. So you can only hear the Kremlin side of the story. Is it nice when you only hear the information that supports your ideas?
Thanks, I forgot about that option. I wish Substack would add that ability as well.
The question isn’t which side started threatening the other with nuclear weapons first, the real question is why is the US provoking this war in this far-away area of the world? We used to talk about spheres of influence, and how we need to be mindful of that. No longer. The US acts as if no country is off limits. For a serious, in-depth analysis of what has gone wrong with US foreign policy, an analysis that really probes the psychology behind their actions, I would suggest this series of videos on peace on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/mrxrtzpp
The better question is, why is Russia invading neighboring countries?
what did the US do when Russia placed missiles in Cuba? By the way the US provoked that response as well by placing missiles in Italy in Turkey
So let’s then let Russia do anything it wants because of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Got you.
is someone paying you to make these comments and spread disinformation? how much?
Don Julio is being purposely obtuse.
a tactic right out of the Trolling 101 Handbook.
and if he gets paid to do it that would make him a shill.
Why do you assume that literally anyone who looks at an issue and disagrees with you is a paid troll? (I was also accused of being a “shill being paid by George Soros” for opposing Trump during the 2016 election. Regretfully, )
I think most of you sound like you’re working in some Russian cubicle to churn out Kremlin propaganda … but I don’t think you ARE. I think you just believe the propaganda, not make it 😉
I wished. That would be easy money. I should actually look into it as I sometimes spend more time here than I would like. But I like ANTIWAR. Much more before the Ukraine war as now it has been flooded by too many anti US.
I 100% support Ukraine and Palestine. Love Russia (not the Kremlin), Belarus, and Ukraine as I spent quite sometime in those countries and don’t like what Putin did to Chechnya and is doing to Georgia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Perhaps soon to Dagestan and Kazakhstan if the Russian Army doesn’t get to beat up in Ukraine.
I have visited this website since 2002 thanks to the awesome work of Justin Raimondo. In fact, I’m overdue a small donation.
Here’s a lesson for you: Learn the difference between Disinformation and Misinformation. You cannot use them interchangeably thinking they mean the same.
Truly yours,
Your favorite Troll.
Don, you need to get yourself educated on America’s foreign policy over its history. I suggest you read “The Brothers” by Stephen Kinzer and “The Devil’s Chessboard” by David Talbott. Both will give you an eye opening picture of what America is really all about.
Russia is not invading neighboring countrIES. Putin drew a bright red line in the sand saying that Ukraine would not become a NATO battering ram against Russia. NATO/US crossed that red line and has been menacing Russia for decades. If you want peace then petition NATO/US to make Ukraine a neutral state.
The first question is, why did NATO and the US break their promise to not expand NATO (right up to Russia’s borders)? And the 2nd question is, why did we help overthrow the democratically elected government of Ukraine?
How many times has everyone heard the term “all options are on the table”? And when they talk about ALL OPTIONS, don’t they mean ALL OPTIONS? So, in other words, how many times has the US threatened to use nukes? Of course, once again, whataboutism will be the reason one shouldn’t compare the biggest threat to peace in the world to a relative pipsqueak. Putin is the next Hitler after all.
On another world stage, the timing of the protests in Iran is interesting. Protesters are demanding a regime change. Hmmmmmmmm
This is Putin’s war. It is not Russia’s war. Darth Vlad’s failing storm troopers and their separatist sidekicks are going door to door in occupied Ukraine to collect votes and check for draft age Ukrainian men. But the real referendum is being held in Russia. Thousands of young Russian men are voting against the war by flooding the airports and jamming the borders from Europe to Mongolia desperately trying to escape being drafted into Darth Vlad’s army of occupation. Hundreds of Russian women and men are being arrested committing civil disobedience protesting a war of aggression by a totalitarian government that sentences people to seven years imprisonment for calling the war a war. In the Kremlin Darth Vlad sits alone at the end of his long table and fires another general and signs decrees increasing the penalties for desertion, surrender or refusing to fight.
The war is over. Seven months of fighting has proven that the Ukrainian nation will survive. Wars of national liberation and national resistance are determined by hearts and minds, not force of arms. Hypersonic missiles and long range artillery and tanks with close air support might defeat the Ukrainian Army. But brute force only makes the resistance to the foreign invasion stronger. Even if the Russian army drives the Ukrainian resistance underground, Darth Vlad’s legions will never be able to withdraw without surrendering the occupied territory. Darth Vlad has lost.
Like Nixon after Tet, Darth Vlad can’t comprehend how a small nation can defeat a military superpower. He is following in the footsteps of Nixon and the Soviets in Afghanistan. Escalating. But escalation will not lead to victory. It only strengthens the resistance and prolongs the invader’s defeat.
US and NATO aid have helped Ukraine resist the invasion. But US and NATO aid did not and could not create the national consciousness or the national resistance movement that is defeating Darth Vlad’s invasion. The US provided even more aid to the South Vietnamese and the Kabul regime to no avail. On the other hand, even if NATO cut off aid to the Ukrainian resistance and even if Zerensky surrendered and became a quisling, the resistance would go underground, find new leadership and eventually prevail. The Russian army will never be able to pacify any part of Ukraine except perhaps Crimea.
The good news from Russia this week has been that the Russian people are making it clear that Darth Vlad’s war is not their war and they don’t want to fight a war of aggression. It is only a matter of time now before the war ends. I hope it is soon.
First, if you have nuclear weapons, you already are threatening everyone, including your own people. Don’t matter what they say.
Exactly, just like us who do not have a “no first use” policy.
This is horrible. My condolences to the family of these kids.
But you bet your rear end, Russia is going to use this Russian Nazi gunman as a false flag and blame it on AZOV, US and NATO to get more support for the Mobilization.

13 dead, 21 wounded in school shooting in Russia
MOSCOW (AP) — A gunman killed 13 people, including seven children, and wounded 21 other people in a school in central Russia on Monday, authorities said.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said the shooting took place in a school in Izhevsk, a city about 960 kilometers (600 miles) east of Moscow in the Udmurtia region. Those wounded were 14 children and 7 adults, the Committee said.
The governor of Udmurtia, Alexander Brechalov, said in a video statement that the still unidentified gunman shot himself.
The school educates children between grades 1 and 11. It has been evacuated and the area around it has been cordoned off, the governor said.
According to the Investigative Committee, the gunman wore a black t-shirt with “Nazi symbols.” No other details about the shooter or his motives have been released.
Izhevsk, a city of 640,000, is located west of the Ural mountains in central Russia.
Please stop your wishful thinking!
The problem with throwing nukes around is that the bigdeals are likely to get incinerated along with the proles. So a nuclear exchange is unlikely to happen. So this is a war of attrition, and neither party seems anywhere near the bottom of the barrel yet. My intuition is that China will not let Russia lose, or at least not lose too badly, unless and until they’re ready to take off Siberia. According to the neocon writers variously quoted on the Net, the US plan was to destabilize Russia with an Afghanistan-like situation, but if they were strong enough to do this they would have done it by now. So perhaps they too are cognizant of the Chinese problem, as well as the current Verdun or whatever it is.
The best thing for everybody, the most rational thing, would be for all parties to declare victory and go home. But they’re not worn down enough yet. They’re still in “Winning isn’t everything — it’s the only thing” mode. Meanwhile, as a noted US personage said, “F*ck the EU.” And, I suppose, the poor Ukrainians of whatever persuasion, who somehow got sucked into being a cat’s paw. Well, they have my advice now, along with the others. Fat chance, eh?
The Russians can’t compete with the USA when it comes to interventions and outright invasions. The list of US attempts to overturn governments starting in 1776, includes every continental area excluding Australia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_interventions_by_the_United_States
Russia doesn’t come close, past or present.
The Russians have been hemmed in on the west ever since the collapse of the Soviet Union, followed by the push to bring NATO to the eastern border of Europe. This last year keeps reminding me of the games being played in the lead-up to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Only my view, but I wonder if Biden’s ramping up of tensions in Iran and Taiwan following this proxy war in Ukraine have a lot to do with his comfort zone during the good old cold war days – especially when one looks at how unappetizing domestic politics has become.
