The EU has brought the US and Iran to the table once again for nuclear talks in Vienna, and there is reason to be hopeful. EU officials say they believe one last serious effort is all that’s needed to salvage the talks and reach a deal.
This should come as no surprise. Since March, the last time negotiations moved measurably, indications have been that the talks were effectively over, the draft mostly finished and just waiting to be finalized.
Between then and now, nothing bad has happened, it’s just that the US has walked away from the talks a few times, only for the EU to convince them to return. So the deal is still sitting there waiting to be signed.
The only reason to not make a deal is for the sake of bragging about what tough negotiators they are. Unfortunately, the US seems all-too-comfortable with that being the ending of a long, important process.
Russian FM Sergey Lavrov was only too eager to call the US out on this, saying Iran’s stance is legitimate, and that the US needs to fulfill its commitments.
The US does not fulfill commitments. It is agreement-incapable, as Lavrov has repeatedly pointed out.
If an agreement requires the approval of the Senate, rescinding that agreement should 𝒂𝒍𝒔𝒐 require approval of the Senate.
We have walked away from agreements that kept us safe. ABM Treaty, INF Treaty, Open Skies agreement, JCPOA. Those are the agreements I can remember. There are hundreds of treaties and agreements we have failed to honor in the past.
And this agreement, if it’s reached, will go out the window in approx 2.5 years when the next admin is installed. So, the point for Iran and EU and US is purely cosmetic.
But it continues to be very damaging to US soft power.
Will the EU call out the defaulting party?
Biden is altogether too beholding to Israel at the moment, he will never sign off on this before November. After that who knows who will control Congress.
It’s obvious it doesn’t matter who controls congress. The democrats have both houses and didn’t do shit. The Iran hatred is as bipartisan as it gets. Can’t cash AIPAC donation checks to their re-election campaigns without complete loyalty.
WRU:
I hate to be so cynical but I must agree…
You’re not being cynical,Donna.
You’re being honest.
Eventually, Europe is going to have to admit that the US doesn’t care about their problems. Recent examples: Regime change operations in Libya & Syria that triggered the refugee crisis. Regime change in Ukraine that added to the refugee crisis along with energy and food costs high enough to destabilize their economies, and the possibility of another devastating war fought on THEIR territory.
We are very pleased, though, to sell them LNG at prices that generate excess profits here.
Time for the world to tell the US to pull its head in.
Or pull its head out of its ass, Andrew.
The Elephant in the room regards a deal with Iran is Israel , infact it is fair to the only thing Israel wants is a all out war with Iran obviously with the US taking the lead Israel on it`s own would be wiped out by Iran.
I firmly agree JJ and it makes me very sad. We can find all kinds of faults with the world but there is a moment when must look in the mirror and see ourselves and our faults and imperfections and our ulterior motives…
Truer words were never spoken, Jesse.
