An EU proposed text for the Iran nuclear deal has gotten enough momentum behind it that the US, Iran, and EU are all sending officials to Vienna for more talks. There are high hopes as the EU will mediate.
The EU has time and again saved the talks when the US was prepared to give up. US envoys are coming into the talks warily, once again.
Iran’s negotiator says the key would be for the US to act responsibly at the talks. That’s a big ask, as for months the US has been surly and prepared to scrap the talks outright, the only interest in blaming Iran.
The EU keeps interceding with proposals and gets good reactions from Iran. That’s not conducive to the US narrative so they keep dragging on the talks with the same disinterest.
All this is at play again with the latest resumption of talks, and again the US shows little interest but likely feels obliged to go along with the EU effort to salvage the process.
At some point rational people have to ask themselves what is the fucking point of even talking about this anymore?
Yes, it’s just going through the motions of diplomacy without the real thing. We are simply not capable of it at this time. The EU can’t seem to understand this.
The point is if the talks totally fail, and Iran believes the deal has not any chance of survival and is completely collapsed… Then, if they start building bombs, US cannot blame Iran for suddenly deviate from their policy and building bombs without any prior diplomacy first…!
Since Iran does not have and never has had any real interest in nukes, it’s pointless to continue. The sole reason Iran continues with the talks is to get the sanctions lifted. It is thus in the US interest to drag the talks out as long as possible. The US other alternative is to let Israel attack Iran and drag the US into it, thus wrecking the region and also sending the oil price higher than it is now.
Which is exactly what the neocons want. Either way, from their viewpoint, the US wins. From everyone else’s viewpoint, it s a disaster.
So we’re back once again to another years of BS about “the deal is almost done – except the US doesn’t agree to lift sanctions.” Which is where it’s been for a year and a half.
The EU wants a deal with Iran now that Russia has restricted their gas so they can import oil and gas from Iran… It remains to be seen if they have the guts to confront US to sign the deal for their survival especially when this winter falls on their continent…!
You’re right, it’s exactly like Saddam’s WMD, a brazen lie; but it works. Washington ‘interest’ in talks is mostly PR, i.e., it’s useful to be able to say they made every effort to negotiate, … before they deliver their patented shock & awe therapy.
