In late May, Russia fired S-300 missiles at Israeli jets attacking Syria. Israeli DM Benny Gantz confirmed this, calling it a “one-off.” The incident was reported when it happened, but this is the first time officials are discussing it.
Russia has long complained about Israeli attacks on Syria, but this marks the first time they’ve actually fired on them over it. Israel says the planes were not in danger, and indeed said the heaviest fire came after the planes had already left.
Absent in the reports on this incident was anything from Russia explaining the standard by which Israeli planes can expect similar resistance. Generally, Russia opposes Israeli operations near Russian bases.
That is hasn’t happened again suggests that it may well have been a “one-off,” as Israel has been attacking Syria semi-regularly lately. Negotiations between the two nations may have sorted out what the red lines are.
Israel bombing Syria, Lebanon, Iran… Nobody is bombing Israel. They have their nukes, and anybody that was to bomb them would risk getting one of them. It is just a matter of time before others obtain nukes, but they think being tough is the golden fleece. They just don’t seem to be able to “Just get along”
Russia had enough of Israeli meddling. Including in Ukraine. Or didn’t Israel know that the Russians had already figured this out?
One off he hopes. I wouldn’t say that. Israel sending zionazi troops to kill Russians in the ukraine won’t be forgiven or forgotten. Gloves are off.
since when are Israeli troops in the Ukraine?
Get up to speed. Please. They are there. So are our very own CIA gents/women.
Not exactly ‘strange bedfellows’.
Show me your sources!
Merc’s sent by the regime. Same thing in this case.
What regime? what are you talking about?
russia fired missiles at israeli jets in syria.
missed by a mile though, didn’t they.
A warning, my friend. Just a warning. Russia was invited by Syria to defend Syria.
Russia wasn’t even trying. The threat tracking software on this & almost all Russian missiles has been, “dumbed down” in anticipation of use against western countermeasures.
Interesting thought. It seems like if a missile can maintain a sensor lock and outrun and out g the target then there’s no way a manned aircraft can evade, and with the latest computers a missile is smarter than a pilot, particularly in a multiple contact engagement.
“Generally, Russia opposes Israeli operations near Russian bases.”
But they can bomb the rest of Syria?
No one is trying to stop them. Everybody is bombing Syria it is unseemly.
The US-Israel-Russia triangle may be the start of Armageddon. The S-300 was a warning shot. Russia has the firepower and independence to restrain Israel and has decided to do so. Crossing Israel is the neocon’s red line and they will escalate to nuclear war over it. Maybe a quick nuclear exchange between Russia and Israel will be the game changing nuclear war that humanity needs to get rid of nuclear weapons. Maybe the Russia/Israel conflict will quickly escalate and the Russians will preemptively nuke the Israeli nuclear arsenal while the US military stands down from the neocon button pushers. Maybe only a few cities will be lost and humanity will decide it’s had enough of that sort of thing. Of course, that’s a best case.
Nicely summed up Ted.
Russia has the ability to make Israel flat, black and glow in the dark. Israel has to be a little more careful and rein in some of their leaders.
One Sarmat could essentially wipe out Isreal but the Israeli nuclear arsenal could do existential damage to Russia. If push comes to shove the Russians will evacuate their cities and get their ABM capability as ready as possible and then hit the Israeli nuclear arsenal with serious MTs. They might be able to get the entire land based arsenal with SLBMs but the Israeli subs might be tricky. But the Russians know a thing or two about subs. Hopefully the US military would just stay the hell out of it.
Does Israel have the delivery capability for nuclear weapons to Russia? Even if they have subs, do they have the ability to launch?
The suspicion is yes.
The Russians won’t give them any benefit of the doubt. They’ll hit everything with multiple MTs, they have it to spare.
The real question is: Does Israel have the balls (to start WWIII)?
They wouldn’t need to, all they need to do is convince the Russians they might. If Israel isn’t known for its nuclear clarity Russia definitely isn’t known for its f*cking around. They saw a large part of their country laid waste within living memory. Never again.
Not the balls, Donna ((IsraHell has none) but the vindictiveness and ignorance.
Wikipedia says Israel has “submarine-launched cruise missiles and medium and intercontinental ballistic missiles, with Israeli Air Force long range strike aircraft on call to perform nuclear interdiction and strategic strikes.” The land based ICBMs are probably the biggest threat, Russia would want to get those first. I think a cool way to do it would be to de-orbit a swarm of warheads from a single orbiting carrier. They have the technology, though keeping it secure would be a problem. CGI would eat it up.
Ted, if Israel was involved, the Amerikkkan regime would be on it like a fly on sh*t.
One could take this statement literally if one wishes. Guess who’s the “sh*t”.
I’ve read intimations the US military knows the score and has its limits but if the Russians hit the Israeli nuclear arsenal it will be over in a matter of minutes so other than suicidal second hand retaliation the US couldn’t do anything about it. It would be a choice between living without Israel or joining it in annihilation. The neocons might settle for the film rights.
Israel could return the favor (probably)
But they probably won’t rein them in. It isn’t the first time that Israel has played this dangerous game…
This was a warning shot…!
The US needs to regime change itself and then quit funding racist Israeli apartheid wars.
Clean, clear and concise.
Israel needs to put ‘it’ back in their pants…
“apartheid”-meanwhile Israel has millions of Arab citizens, some doing very well. The Arab nations expelled their Jewish populations-but that of course is OK,lets deny,it doesn’t count.
It won’t be a “one-off” if Israel keeps pushing. Russia can gain against the US by escalating in Syria. Russia and Syria still want the US out of Syria.
If Russia were to possess any serious intention on defending Syria, Russia could, would, should have already “sold, rented, leased, given or simply placed SS400s in Syria, especially Damascus.
If Russia were to have done that, then any attacking, waring and killing air assault would be seriously and most successfully countered.
Russia has no real political intention of defending Syria or Iran for that matter. If it did it would make SS400s available, as Russia did for Turkey.
I apologize for offering real politic into the discussion.
To avoid any misunderstanding, I have been advocate from the beginning of Russia providing SS400s to Syria and Iran since Russia incorporated SS400s into its own defenses.

Russian has what it wants in Syria, the regime is propped up, and they have a naval base. The rest of it not that important to them.
Maybe they just want to take down an Israeli jet to increase their sales.
I suspect they can’t, the IAF has been dealing with Russian air defenses for many years and seems to be able to get around them. I know monkey models, operated by Arabs. Still it must piss their customers off that the stuff doesn’t work
If the Israelis haven’t lost an aircraft to an S-300 it’s because they stayed out of its kill envelope.
tautological now what if the kill envelope for the s-300 against an IAF F35 is smaller than the kill envelop for an IAF F35 of the S-300, which I expect is the case. Then the poor slobs at the S-300 have a problem.
If the S-300 won’t get it then it should call up an S-500. And the F-35 is just ugly. And I don’t think an F-35 can get an S-300, though it might get the launcher with the right ordinance. Still, I don’t think you can move something like an F-35 through the air at transonic speed without putting enough energy into the environment to be detected, and if you can be detected, and outrun, and out g-eed, you can be killed.
