ISIS forces are taking credit for an overnight attack on a guard post in Rashad, Iraq, near the city of Kirkuk. 13 Iraqi police were killed and three others wounded in the two-hour battle.
ISIS forces used bombs to prevent reinforcements reaching the area, and also destroyed three police videos, making this one of the bigger ISIS strikes within Iraq in months.
ISIS once dominated much of northwestern Iraq, and then was nearly entirely removed from Iraq in fighting. At this point, they are trying to reestablish themselves, and Kirkuk seems to be the place they’re doing it.
What’s left of ISIS isn’t a substantial threat to Iraq right now, but after the last war officials are wary that they could become a threat again. This is likely to lead to reactions and even overreactions in the area.
