Israeli Strikes Kill 29 in Gaza Over 24 Hours Amid Starvation Blockade

Gaza’s Health Ministry said Monday that Israeli attacks killed 29 Palestinians and wounded 94 as Israel has continued its strikes amid a total blockade that’s been imposed for more than 70 days.

The Health Ministry said that another four bodies of Palestinians killed by previous Israeli attacks were recovered from the rubble. “There are still a number of victims under the rubble and on the streets, and ambulance and civil defense crews cannot reach them,” the ministry wrote on Telegram.

Israeli attacks included overnight strikes on a school sheltering forcibly displaced Palestinians in Jabalia, northern Gaza. A medical source told Turkey’s Anadolu Agency that at least 16 people, including women and children, were killed in the attack.

The Israeli military briefly paused attacks on Gaza on Monday during the release of Edan Alexander, a New Jersey-born IDF soldier who was freed as part of a deal between the US and Hamas. The Israeli military only briefly “limited its activity” for a few hours in Gaza before resuming strikes, according to The Times of Israel.

Also on Monday, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a famine watchdog, warned that famine was imminent in Gaza if Israel didn’t lift its blockade on aid and all other goods, which has been imposed since March 2. “The entire population is facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with half a million people (one in five) facing starvation,” the IPC said.

The Health Ministry said that since Israel resumed its genocidal war on March 18, at least 2,749 Palestinians have been killed, and 7,607 were injured. The numbers account for dead and wounded Palestinians brought to hospitals and morgues.

Since October 7, 2023, the ministry’s death toll has reached 52,862, and the number of wounded has climbed to 119,648, figures that don’t account for thousands missing and presumed dead under the rubble or indirect deaths caused by the Israeli siege.
