White House envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday that President Trump will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week to discuss the potential for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
“The two presidents are going to have a really good and positive discussion this week,” Witkoff said in an interview with CNN. “The two sides are a lot closer today than they were a few weeks ago. We narrowed the differences.”
Witkoff met with Putin in Moscow last week following the US announcement that it was resuming military aid and all intelligence to Ukraine and that Ukraine was ready to agree to a 30-day ceasefire.
Putin has welcomed the idea of a ceasefire but said it must include several conditions, including a guarantee that the US wouldn’t ship any new weapons to Ukraine during the truce. He also wants Ukraine not to mobilize new troops or train its forces.
Other Russian officials have made clear that they view the US-Ukraine ceasefire proposal as a chance for Ukraine to rearm and stabilize its lines of defense since the offer came as Russia has the clear advantage on the battlefield and continues to make gains in eastern Ukraine. Russia has also almost finished pushing Ukrainian forces out of Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Trump said on Friday that he asked Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers encircled in Kursk. “I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared. This would be a horrible massacre, one not seen since World War II,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Putin responded by saying the Ukrainian troops should surrender. “[In] the event of a ceasefire and surrender, they will be guaranteed life and a worthy treatment in accordance with the norms of international law and the laws of the Russian Federation,” he said.
Russia has also made clear that for any long-term peace deal, the US and Ukraine would have to recognize the four Ukrainian Oblasts annexed by Moscow as Russian territory. For their part, Ukrainian officials are insisting they won’t cede any territory.
Despite the differences, Witkoff said he expects a ceasefire to be reached “within weeks.” The idea is to reach a truce and then start negotiating the terms of a long-term deal.

Excellent move in the correct direction!…
Trump Confirms Tuesday Call With Putin on War, Land, Power Plants in Ukraine. https://www.kyivpost.com/post/49023
“We will be talking about land. We will be talking about power plants,” Trump said, describing the “negotiations” as “dividing up certain assets.”
Trump to Putin: You know that I know that you know that I'm a MADMAN.
Everybody knows Trump is a chicken when Iran strikes US military bases.
Putin: If I give you the dove, your eagle will kill it. If I give you the olive branch, you'll kill the dove.
Trump: Don't waste my time. You already know my eagle only brings arrows.

Other than the ongoing one in Gaza.
They are war criminals: they have massacred the civilians in Sudzha and nearby villages.
But "Gaza" for Genocide Don is a labor of love to win the hand (and 31B) of a 'maid', the beauteous bloody miriam.
Russian conditions are reasonable (else Ukraine would get great advantage of the truce only to betray it at convenience, as happened before) but either inacceptable for the West or impossible to apply in practice (who will check if Ukraine is training or recruiting?, for example, who is the referee?)
So, no new weapons or troops to the front.
Is Russia willing to agree to those same conditions?
No and that's the point. Ukraine is the loser and they have to demilitarize.
So far, both regimes have been losers in this war and that’s likely to remain the case.
While Trump is unpredictable, I doubt he will fall for Putin’s “give me everything I’ve been trying and failing to take for three years and I’ll pinky promise to not try to take any more” proposal.
Putin has welcomed the idea of a ceasefire but said it must include several conditions, including a guarantee that the US wouldn’t ship any new weapons to Ukraine during the truce. He also wants Ukraine not to mobilize new troops or train its forces.
In other words, the reason Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire.
Minsk 3, as I’ve said before.
It'll be more like Riyadh1…!
Any US guarantee is not worth the air it's breathed into nor any medium it may be consigned, as the Russians well know.
"as the Russians well know"…
…and as the Ukes ought to have known since being told, 'No NATO for you' in March 2022…but may now unpleasantly re-learn.
Sorry, Wars. I noticed a typo. They agreed to continue the war until the last Ukrainian. Everything else is stupid details.
"the reason Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire."
Indeed, likely the carrot – and clearly Ukraine wanted it to be a non-negotiable offer to Russia.
But it appears the US did negotiate…and would Witkoff have opened his craw and warbled about the two sides drawing closer etc. if counter-terms hadn't been pre-agreed?…though not sure what…a 30-day 'settlement timeline' to press Ukraine to accept particular permanent settlement terms – like territory loss?
We should soon see.
tough guy witkoff sounds suspiciously stil trump: “The two presidents are going to have a really good and positive discussion this week, …” Real "tough guys" don't gush. It's a scripted set-up. Unless it morphs to unconditional surrender the talks will obviously fail, whereat the trumpsters will claim they were misled by the untrustworthy Putin

They desperately seek some face-saving means and only appear all the more pathetic.
The ceasefire discussion's length and breadth depend on the Russian president's discretion. I suspect two minutes or less.
President Trump has done everything possible to extend the conflict he claims to abhor. See Gaza, Syria, and Yemen.
When Russia reasons that American troops, mercenaries, intelligence personnel, and ISR assets including Starlink have been removed from theatre, then that may compel Britain, Germany, and France to send in the clowns or cannon fodder.
It wouldn't make sense for those countries to invoke Article 5 if the US departed the theatre of operations that hasn't been declared a war by Europe, or the US. See the War Powers Act and the AUMF.
I assume you reside in America and that rule of law is rather tenuous regarding US military engagements.
Russia has set it's requirements in stone since the beginning of the American overthrow of the Ukrainian government since 2014!
1. No NATO
2. Neutral Ukraine
3. De-Nazification of Ukraine
You can add, NO European troops as peacekeepers in postwar Ukraine.
Its NOT Rocket Surgery, Rocket Science, or Brain Surgery.
Rubio is a neophyte so it will take President Trump and President Putin to negotiate and end to this war.
How about the one in Gaza you hypocrite…?! That is a Massacre in Progress since October 7, 2023 worse than World War II idiot…!
He is talking to his brainwashed subjects who believe him.
1/ "Trump and Putin to Discuss Potential Ukraine Ceasefire This Week"
NYT 3/17 – call "scheduled for Tuesday," Kremlin confirms.
"Trump’s Plan to Discuss Ukraine’s Power Plants With Putin Prompts Q's"
2/ As also noted in article, neither the US or Russia is divulging what Witkoff & Putin said in 3-4 hours last Thurs, or what "conditions" will be talked about Tues – only broad remarks re territory, power plants.
Meaning? Looks like – after Ukr accepted a 30-day ceasefire – both Z. and Europe are deliberately excluded as US and Russia…'play ball.'
3/ Upshot? Zelensky's frantic yammering – outside the locked ball court – is a sign he's lost control of the narrative…suggested also by Witkoff's statements about 'the two sides' – US-Russia – drawing "a lot closer," and by Witkoff's pointedly going on record to reject and disparage the view that Russia is not interested in a ceasefire – targeting Europe, but applying to Z as well:
"Witkoff reacts to Western leaders' claims about Putin's refusal to end the war" (RBC Ukraine)
"Putin responded by saying the Ukrainian troops should surrender. “[In] the event of a ceasefire and surrender, they will be guaranteed life and a worthy treatment in accordance with the norms of international law and the laws of the Russian Federation,” he said."
This further underscores the restraint I have mentioned several times in the Russian Federation campaign against Ukraine.
If I were President of the RF, I would see to it that "kursk" became a new word in the Ukrainian language, meaning "black hole" (akin to astrophysical definition). Everything Ukrainian – soldiers, equipment, weapons – that went into Kursk, was never seen again. EVER. Blackest of black sites, or unmarkest of unmarked graves.
Send a message that any invasion of Russian territory is a living nightmare with a horrifically uncertain outcome. Not just to Ukraine. To NATO and all its members.
Or, in a more benevolent mood, I'd parse all the POW's, killing all the neo-Nazis (identified by intel, tattoos, insignias) and sending everyone else back to Ukraine after saying "Anyone coming back who was a neo-Nazi gave up that ideology, recanted fully in the face of death.". Let their Aryan pals deal with their disloyalty back home.

Like Kennedy and Khrushchev, Trump and Putin should talk about USA missiles in NATO.
Trump has to convince the entire Russian people, they are stron and smart compared to US subjects who do exactly as they are ordered.
How will Trump propose to remove British SAS troops from Odessa?
The British know how to utilize a monkey wrench.
