President Donald Trump threatened to intensify the US economic war on Russia with large scale sanctions and tariffs. Trump’s post followed massive Russian attacks on Ukraine.
Trump wrote on Friday, “Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED. To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”
The President issued the threat following an overnight Russian attack on Ukraine’s power and gas facilities that deployed over 250 missiles and drones. Kiev says it used F-16s, and for the first time, French-made Mirage-2000 fighter jets to repel the attack.
Ukraine reported destroying most of the drones but only half of the 70 missiles Russia launched. Kiev has a policy of not discussing successful Russian attacks, so it is unclear what was destroyed. At least eight people were injured in the attack.
Kiev and Moscow have increasingly targeted the other’s energy infrastructure throughout the war. On Tuesday, the Ukrainian military claimed to have struck two pipelines, two oil refineries, and a fuel storage facility in Russia, including an oil refinery in the Samara Oblast about 500 miles from the frontlines.
Since taking office, Trump has made ending the war in Ukraine a priority. Officials in his administration have engaged in several rounds of talks with Russia. In a major success, the two superpowers agreed to restore diplomatic relations.
Ukrainian President Zelensky resisted Trump’s demand to begin talks to end the war, and did not sign a mineral deal with the US. Trump then cut military aid and intelligence support for Kiev, with members of his administration saying it could be restarted if Ukraine engaged in talks with Russia.
Trump is now saying he will increase pressure on Russia not to exploit the reduced US support for Ukraine, and enter into talks. However, it’s unclear how much economic pressure Washington can put on Moscow at this point. After President Vladimit Putin invaded Ukraine, Biden worked with the European Union to place several rounds of sanctions on Russia, aimed at “crippling” the Russian economy.
Three years into the war, Moscow has weathered the economic war by developing deeper ties with countries outside of Washington’s orbit. The Western sanctions were intended to bring the Russian war machine to a halt, but Moscow has been able to invest considerable resources in protruding arms and upgrading its military.

Like this article says, that didn't work the first time. But I would guess Trump's narcissism allows him to believe him threatening the same thing will work this time around.
See also, "Trump threatening BRICS nations not to form a currency to challenge the US Dollar" as Trump threatens the R in 'BRICS' with economic harm by way of American financial hegemony.
And here's him on Iran. And this was after HE hadsaid Iran wasn't trying to make a nuke. But for some reason they have to negotiate or else. I've noticed that the "or else" thing is a recurring theme.
"I would rather negotiate a deal. I'm not sure that everybody agrees with me, but we can make a deal that would be just as good as if you won militarily," Trump said. "But the time is happening now, the time is coming up. Something is going to happen one way or the other. I hope that Iran, and I've written them a letter, saying I hope you're going to negotiate because if we have to go in militarily it's going to be a terrible thing for them."
Yeah, Trump does have a certain mobsterish “nice country, be a shame if anything happened to it …” undertone in his attempts at international diplomacy.
Undertone???
Well, more like Shepard Tone.

I read Iranian news daily and my impression is Iranian leaders will not speak with the US because it has an unreliable lying government.

Donny one-note.
"[Sanctioning Russia] didn't work the first time. But I would guess Trump's narcissism allows him to believe threatening the same thing will work this time around."
1/ That…OR it's a preemptive answer to predictable 'Trump's gone wholly over to Putin' reactions.
2/ I do not know, and lack confidence that I know…but – plausibly supporting the 'preemptive answer' reading – see what might be thought of as a parallel case:
cjgeek's post, citing Mouin Rabbani, on Trump's "bloodcurdling" Gaza threats as a means of placating the bloodthirsty US Zionist base as he deals w/Hamas 'over Israel's head.'
(posted in "Trump Says the ‘People of Gaza’ Will Be ‘Dead’ If Hostages Aren’t Released" thread – note I cannot find another Rabbani post, where he explicitly framed the question: 'Is Trump tryna placate the critical US Zionist base as he tries to rack up an America-first hostage get-back?…or simply greenlighting Israeli genocide?')
3/ With Tr 'caring about human life or life on earth' implausible, the big motive here would be 'domination of US politics to further oligarchy'
"Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now…"
No, no, Ukraine Apologists insist that the Russian Federation is not doing that, and that Ukraine is in fact just a week or two away from Total Victory™ !
No I believe thats the Russian supporters like yourself whenever Ukraine faces bad news
Russia and its leaders are in an unsaught war with neoliberal totalitarianism. The US is a lying, cheating low class country and my hope is it can learn about rational governance from Russia, which is struggling toward democracy in the face of US evil warmongering. Go Russia!
Russia is… illiberal democracy/ neoliberal totalitatianism
I remember another 'Don' on here back in '22' stating that the Ukrainians were chasing the Russians back across the border towards Moscow. Ok.
Oh. Yes. I do & don't miss that Grand Champion of a clown.
"No, no, Ukraine Apologists insist that the Russian Federation is not [pounding Ukraine], and that Ukraine is in fact just a week or two away from Total Victory™ "
Yea, breaking out like a foul rash, all over the mainstream press, the same recycled demands for a new extension of younger and younger Ukrainian and Russian boys dying for that victory that for 3 years has been just around the corner.
No doubt you could find the same warmongering voices crying for an endless extension of the Vietnam War as it ended – and 50 years later intoning 'We coulda won it if we'd just stuck it out and kept napalming and carpet bombing.'
Atlantic, 'Ukraine is Not Losing' – because, 'No, don't look at Ukraine – Look only at Russia and what this one warmongering think tank says about it's being on its last legs – this time after 3 years for sure!
[postscript: moonofalabama analyzes/mocks this obviously contrived argument]
Or Roger Cohen's smelly regurgitation in the NYT, championing "Biden's]…passionate defense of democracy and a rules-based order" vs. Putin's first-Ukraine-tomorrow-the-West drive to "ressurec[t]" Russia.
I'm seeing more people referencing Moon of Alabama recently, it's refreshing.
I do….
The Ukrainians are now fleeing Kursk, thousands are trapped and will soon surrender.
Mar 5, 2025 RUN Before It's Too Late: TURKEY Offered Zelensky Asylum amid Putin's Order to ARREST Him
A few hours ago, Ukrainian political scientist Konstantin Bondarenko, who has fled Ukraine, stated that the leader of the Kiev regime, Volodymyr Zelensky, is entirely distraught by permissiveness and impunity. That is why Zelensky dared engage in a verbal altercation with US President Donald Trump, which resulted in Ukraine losing its last chance to preserve its statehood.

Trumpenomics.
Just noise by trump to cover his tracks. He is pro Putin, don't let this distraction fool you.
Seems to me that like Putin, he's a Nationalist.
And so was Hitler.
Yes, the main complaint to be heard among nationalist Germans at the time about their Fuhrer, is that he was too resolutely pro Stalin. That's the thing about nationalism, too much fervor for other people's nations.
I think you misspelled 'narcissist'.
I'm left to conclude Zelensky isn't going anywhere. Tymoshenko and Poroshenko received no honest assurances from American 'diplomats' and Zelensky has threatened his fellow Ukrainian ex-politicians.

Donald Trump threatened sanctions against Russia Friday—before getting right back to blaming Ukraine for the continued fighting there.

Clearly his specialty is "threatening".
I was waiting for this to happen! Trump got spanked, and was reminded of his “responsibility ” to UK and Europe,
So he quickly — without getting ONE word of committment from either Zelenski, Uk and other European snakes on ending the war — changes course.
Of course Zelenski sent a classic non-appoligy appology by husstling Trump AGAIN – placing that minerals bait back on the table. Not really ANY interest in ending war. Minerals in exchange for more cash and military gear.
Trump has just been outhustled!
Trump thought he could get ONE burden off US back — Ukraine — by giving maximum gifts to Israel. Since supporters of one and the other war are same — he was thought a valuable lesson. UK apparently has more pull than we thought.
Let us see how he reacts.
But those hustlers that outhustled Trump have blinders on – intoxicated by the spectacular success thus far.
They do not see that China — presumably having economic difficulties — is getting out one groundbreaking technological advancement after the other. It is even not that simple. It is possible that the alproach to AI architecture — the debate that started in the nineties — will finally have to be reconsidered? China has proven that it is not hitting the wall of more powerful chips or the increased demand on raw computing power to acbieve same outcome.
These intoxicated folks do not see or even understand why Russia did not invest in the range of consumer technologies, instead focused resouces on own digital ecosystem and scientific talent in order to advance defence industry, demonstrating last year a true milestone. A non nuclear version equivalent to a nuclear bomb.
And those are not even noticing how our own talent is being neglected in favor of people with sharp elbows and a talent for fitting into a work culture of perfect robots. Real talent has run away from such toxic places and can easier make a living in IT universe, or have checked out altogether.
Musk epitomizes this new culture. He is not a scientist but plays one — not just on TV — but experimenting with his corporate-level AI prowess to defermine what is talent and what is not, or better yet — redefining what the successful outcome is! Take SpaceX or Neuralink as an example. Let us not look into WHO finances its projects and what is the CRITERIA for success, It is whatever he thinks it is. Genius.
As for Russia — war goes on. Unless Trump can produce somebody from Ukraine to actually show up at the negotiating table.
Looks like he cannot. Europe is threatening war —as it must. Ukraine has enough resources to refloat UK and EU financial systems, so war financing is based in controlling Ukraine’s wealth as a collateral.
They are all facing bankrupcy, as euro system is merely a derivative of dollar system. US would be the orimary beneficiary. Will the trans-Atlantic world cannibalise itself — or will at least for a while delay the ourcome. Europe wants the delay until Trump can be controlled or is gone.
Trump appears to be a weather vane in everyone else's wind.
Minerals in exchange for more cash and military gear.
Minerals that mostly they don't have. Relying on geological surveys from the Soviet era they're offering up "resources" that are of no better quality than found elsewhere in Europe. The only financially viable deposits are almost all in Russian-held territory, which Russia is not even interested in exploiting because they have better deposits elsewhere.
And even if they did have something worth giving away, they already gave it to the Brits with Sir Kier's '10 Year' economic treaty.
I'm left to conclude Zelensky isn't going anywhere. Tymoshenko and Poroshenko received no honest assurances from American 'diplomats' and Zelensky has threatened his fellow Ukrainian ex-politicians.
Are Netanyahu and Zelensky related?
"Are Netanyahu and Zelensky related?"
I think both are the offspring of cousins; but not the SAME cousins.

An Exposé Into the MAGA Mind
In MAGA world, whenever you see them getting pissed about DEI or what not, they are really getting pissed at their hierarchy being broken.
In MAGA heads, a black or hispanic person with power did not earn any of it, someone just altered the hierarchy, allowing them to have power.
Conservatism isn't fascism, but fascism and conservatism both share the instinctive "things must be a hierarchy" idea, except, of course, fascism takes it much further, as conservatism can still have capitalism
I understand why Trump feels the need to push both sides.
Unfortunately for him, he "has no cards." Biden wasted every last card, and actually went out of his way to sabotage what he left to Trump.
Now, it is only left to accept defeat.
Perhaps it can be minimized, but that requires creative acceptance of the inevitable. It could after all be made worse, and worse yet.
This is the response to Thrump Threat…!
It took a week and one day for me being fooled by the Trump administration about being serious about peace with Russia. I'd say 2 days of doubt preceding. Shame on me for being taken in by the show for such an embarrassingly long time.
Rump has spent most of his adult life laundering money, some of it for weapons dealers like his buddies Adnan Khashoggi (who hid out at Mierda Lago when Interpol issued an international warrant for his arrest) and Viktor Bout (who was hawking two ex-Soviet nukes that Valerie Plame was apparently trying toget possession of when Shrub blew her cover). Peace has never been in his financial interest, but since the black market in US-donated weapons from Ukraine seems to be going through other conduits he's probably mostly miffed that he's not getting his share.
It could very well be, but since I do suspect the amount of people who confuse Trump with Jesus is fairly limited, if true, chances of finding a surprised person in any given sizeable crowd asymptotes to zero.
It could very well be, but since I do suspect the amount of people who confuse Trump with Jesus is fairly limited, if true, chances of finding a surprised person in any given sizeable crowd asymptotes to zero.
"took a week and one day for me being fooled by the Trump administration about being serious about peace with Russia."
you may be right, but it's still an open question imo – not settled by one statement
I am always willing to change my mind. I have already twice on this very subject: changed it for a hopeful interval and then changed it back. Not on the basis of this statement or any other statement. That is hardly relevant. I mean Trump says things. Tremendous things. Things like you have never heard before and so on. It is the larger picture. The continuity of foreign policy is not being broken, it became more theatrical. Declining empires have never in the history of men suffered from a sudden onset of sensible policy. This is precisely the era where the forces of stupidity dominate.
On the domestic policy front it seems to me there signs of it having revolutionary characteristics. Most definitely not in a good way if you are not a multimillionaire at the very least.
At this point it looks to me as though he hasn't learned anything beyond "I want to be president some more…"

Beyond the above ‘root causes’ issue, Trump’s team is not even listening to other more simplistic details from the Russian side. For instance, Kellogg, Rubio, and others continue to cluelessly claim that Russia will “have to make concessions”, particularly on land—which Russia has unequivocally stated over and over again, that they will not do. Yesterday, Kellogg even reportedly hinted that Ukraine would not be allowed to be ‘demilitarized’, completely ignoring that there’s no way Russia could allow a militarily-pumped up hostile power to loom over its citizens again, particularly now that Ukraine has demonstrated its inhumanity in slaughtering Russian civilians by the hundreds in Kursk.
It would be different if the US side at least heard Russia’s demands and concerns, but then rejected them—whether out of typical ‘exceptionalist’ haughtiness or imperialistic vainglory, or whatever; but at least it would demonstrate the US has heard Russian concerns, but chose to ignore them. But the actual case is even worse: the top American negotiators and Cabinet members are displaying a total disregard for even listening to what the other side has to say, instead blindly barking out their own blinkered settlement visions.
"Trump’s team is not…listening to [Russia.] For instance, Kellogg, Rubio, and others continue to cluelessly claim that Russia will 'have to make concessions', particularly on land."
1/ "Have to"? Where? Not what I'm seeing:
"Kellogg said a potential agreement could involve territorial concessions, limits on future military use, and a reduction in troop numbers." https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/international-relations/russia-should-make-territorial-concessions-and-downsize-its-forces-keith-kellogg/ar-AA1z95IA
2/ By contrast, vs. a slippery conjectural "could," Hegseth bluntly said in mid-Feb, 'No NATO membership in any settlement' (i.e., the "root" issue for Russia), and returning to pre-war borders was "unrealistic." https://abcnews.go.com/International/full-ukrainian-liberation-russia-unrealistic-hegseth-tells-allies
3/ postscript: OK, here's a "must": "In my view, there must be territorial concessions. There could also be refusing to use force in the future and downsizing military forces"…
…but w/"In my view," the generality, and return to hypothetical "could's" after, that's not very binding – kind of says, 'This is not a line in the sand.' msn.com/en-us/politics/international-relations/kellogg-names-concessions-russia-must-make-to-settle-war-in-ukraine

If we observe the red-dotted line configuring the Carpathian Mountains, we can roughly determine how rump Ukraine might be redrawn to satisfy Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Poland could regain some territory on either side.

During World War II, the regions of Eastern Galicia and Volhynia, which are now part of Western Ukraine, were part of Poland. These areas were incorporated into the Second Polish Republic following the First World War and were considered part of the Polish state until the joint Soviet-German invasion of Poland in 1939.
Key points about these regions:
Cities: Major cities in these regions include Lviv (Lwów) and Lutsk.
Historical context: These lands were previously part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and had a mixed population of Poles and Ukrainians.
Soviet annexation: Following the invasion of Poland, these regions were annexed by the Soviet Union and became part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic."–AI-Generated
The Poles were rumored to have attended meetings in Moscow recently with sovereign neighbors to discuss these disputed regions. Regarding Donald Tusk's recent nuclear saber-rattling comments against Russia, Moscow may have promised Polish diplomats considerably less than Donald Tusk desired.
It does seem like, while select European and American Cold-War-relics crow about Putin "reviving the Soviet Empire", there's mounting evidence to suggest that the real threat to the continuation of a Ukrainian state comes from age-old territorial aims of Poland and other European neighbours sensing opportunity for annexations.

The conversation becomes more interesting at 12 minutes into the interview when Crooke discusses the UK association with Ukraine.
I have long held that the Russo-Ukrainian war is insane because it proceeds mainly by Ukrainian workers killing Russian workers. To end it one must help both sides defeat their warlord-puppeteers internally. As it was in 1918, the end of this slaughter has to come from the inside, not from the outside. And the Europeans? They need to go back to the Zimmerwald-formula.
