The Gaza ceasefire between Israel and Hamas now may not take effect until Monday instead of Sunday, according to reports in Israeli media.
The Israeli security cabinet was initially supposed to approve the deal on Thursday, but Prime Minister Netanyahu delayed the vote, claiming Hamas was “reneging” on certain details, an accusation the Palestinian group strongly denied.
According to The Times of Israel, negotiators in Doha signed a deal after working out some final details. The Israeli security cabinet is expected to approve it on Friday, but the agreement also needs to be approved by the full Israeli cabinet, which isn’t expected to happen until Saturday.
The Times report said after the full cabinet approval, the names of Palestinian prisoners who will be freed under the deal will be released. Israelis will then have 48 hours to petition against the releases to the Israeli Supreme Court.
Trump, whose pressure on Israel was what advanced the deal, said in an interview on Thursday that the ceasefire must be implemented by his inauguration. “We changed the course of it, and we changed it fast, and frankly, it better be done before I take the oath of office,” he said.
For Palestinians in Gaza, the potential delay in the ceasefire could mean life or death since Israel has ramped up airstrikes across the Strip, killing at least 87 since the ceasefire deal was announced.
Monday just happens to be when President Trump takes power. What a coincidence.
Yeh, all that matters to the-mouse-that-roared is the show, … Illusion & Reality, the suckers can't tell the difference. He's thinking himself the greatest living flim-flam artist; but, even so, it's not sure they're going to buy this pile of stinking BB shite.
Give us a laugh, what is the difference? If the bombings stop, that is a real cease fire, no matter what you call it. Were you trying to comment on this article.
Just another indication that Netanyahu was dragged kicking and screaming into this ceasefire. It also demonstrates that Israel was forced into this ceasefire without achieving its goals. Thus by delaying a day, he thinks –in his pettiness– he is psychologically torturing the desperate Palestinians of Gaza.
"The world turns blind –its conscience cast away,
While Gaza bleeds yet stands, unbowed, today."
"… another day." 467 days, not counting the 1st Nakba.
More than just "psychologically torturing". Every day scores more Palestinians are being violently killed indiscriminately.
Ashraf, it has a guarantee it can continue the genocide. When has Israel, and its monsters leading the river of blood, ever acted honorably?
The only motive is to take back Israeli hostages, so that there is no pushback from their families. Then Netanyahu can go full throttle in eliminating Palestinians.
Trump is Adelson’s handmaiden. Rather than viewing the Jeffrey Sachs’ video as a message about Netanyahu’s psychopathy, Trump saw it as a weakness for US leadership. In other words, Sachs said Netanyahu was driving the bus. Trump wants to demonstrate that he is “in charge”. And with that, he joins the ranks of other war criminals, like Blinken and Biden.
I hope the Palestinians see through it. It is a shame, a great shame, that no one in the Arab world is protecting them, outside of Houthis. It’s a greater shame that all governments in the west support this, while claiming to be arbiters of human rights. It makes me sick.
You have lots of company, normal people with simple human decency can't help not to be sick.
Israel plays a cynical game. It makes phased agreements with the Palestinians that ensure it immediately gets what it wants. It then violates every subsequent phase and reignites its military assault.

Yes, and it would not be possible without congress allowing it, and Americans being brainwashed (especially evangelicals).
Trump, whose pressure on Israel was what advanced the deal, said in an interview on Thursday that the ceasefire must be implemented by his inauguration. “We changed the course of it, and we changed it fast, and frankly, it better be done before I take the oath of office,” he said.
No mention of the people that will be killed between now and then. Now tell me this isn't for show.
It’s about making Trump look all mighty. I guess he doesn’t care about being a first class war criminal. Who will hold court at the Hague? No one.
There is no Now and Then as far as Israeli is concerned…!
No mention of “or else” what. “It better be done” or we set up an arms embargo? “It better be done” or Netanyahu gets overthrown?
There is no consequence. Just like Genocide Joe.
I understand no exchange of hostages Sun., certainly not on Mon. that would take the attention away from the inauguration, and what would be the point to do it later?
It's just "mowing the lawn" one more day. What's the big deal?
Trump's purpose in life is not to provide you with whatever commentary you wish.
Oh sure, the cease fire is for show, blah blah blah.
You folks will be very upset if/when Trump is able to get Israel to behave, because you just love to complain about it.
So, I'm not allowed to comment on the comment section of an article that mentioned what Trump said?
The cease fire does seem for show. I'd been more impressed if he would have spent the last 15 months condemning Israel's brutality instead bitching about Biden/Harris not doing enough for them and how he would have made sure Israel had all they needed to "finish the job".
And yes, but of course, us folk would rather innocent human beings continue to get slaughtered so we can keep complaining about Trump. Just part of our TDS.
Wait and see what it looks like after the inauguration.
It is much less promising already Jan. 18,
I read yesterday that Israel was directly striking the HTS, the “official” government of Syria.
The expansion continues.
It was inevitable…!
I read some days ago that the southern part of Damascus already looks like Gaza.

Even after the announcement of a ceasefire, reports indicate that the Israeli military is continuing to flatten the remaining residential blocks in northern Gaza, leaving displaced civilians with no homes to return to. Satellite images from January 2025 reveal widespread destruction in Jabalia, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun, alongside expanding tent camps in Gaza City-highlighting the mass displacement caused by the recent Israeli ground operation in northern Gaza.
If a final ceasefire agreement is not reached, Israel will likely target Gaza City next with the same tactics of systematic destruction and displacement.

Netanyahu does what he always does, blame Hamas, they did it.
Seeing is believing, as it looks there will be no exchange before the inauguration and a good chance not much or nothing after the inauguration. The duplicity of the ruling politicians stands, no change.
Trump may be head and shoulders above every leader on this planet when it comes to restoring economies and prosecuting programs that make a nation "stronger", but his "red line" for Israel stands in stark contrast to everything else we like about him and puts him on the same plain as the Deep State!
