Last week, Israel imposed massive evacuation orders including a lot of heavily populated parts of eastern Lebanon, including an evacuation of the entire ancient city of Baalbek. People started fleeing, and within hours, the missiles started hitting the city and surrounding areas.
But where do the people go? With airstrikes having already damaged the border crossings into Syria, most people are having to go to towns and villages outside the evacuation zones. But are they any safer there?
Not so far they aren’t, as in recent Israeli airstrikes into eastern Lebanon, more are hitting areas outside the evacuation zones than the zones themselves. On Friday, 14 airstrikes were reported in eastern Lebanon, and fully 10 of them were outside of the designated zones.
That’s a big problem, because again, the zones included a lot of the most densely populated areas. The small towns and villages people are fleeing into are having enough problems trying to absorb all these people without also coming under attack themselves.
This isn’t an issue just in eastern Lebanon, of course. Yesterday, Israel carried out another attack on the town of Haret Saida, in the country’s southwest. It was the third time they’d attacked the town this week though it too is outside the evacuation zone. Haret Saida reportedly had taken in some 17,000 people from the surrounding area because it was conspicuously outside the zones for cities in the coastal area.
Over 3,000 people have been killed across Lebanon in the ongoing Israeli invasion, and at least 1.2 million people have been displaced by the evacuation orders, which cover more than a quarter of Lebanon’s population.
Inside and outside the zones, the attacks seem to be killing more civilians than combatants, and there is growing international criticism of Israel’s air war. In eastern Lebanon too, despite Israel emphasizing that they are targeting Hezbollah strongholds, the casualties are heavily civilian, and included a number of children.
Reports out of Baalbek suggest that about a third of the city’s 100,000 people stayed behind, most because they had nowhere to go. Since the areas outside the city don’t seem safer, those broad evacuation orders may be viewed skeptically by many in the future.

Why no mention of Israel's casualties?
"A former Israeli major general has claimed that the Army was lying about the casualties in war and that it was beyond what the troops could bear. Noam Tibon told Channel12 news that the Israel Army was lying and that it was short of 10,000 soldiers in the war, which is equivalent to a full division."
The IDF and IAF deserve to be terminated since they are beyond reproach and devoid of any humanity. The government and military are professional liars…deception is their right of passage.
If Trump wins, and the early results indicate that he will, there will be no change in policy.
Israel will continue to be fed the weapons (2,000 bombs) to kill more in Gaza, Lebanon, and now Syria. It is well to remember that he moved the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, approved of Israel annexing the Golan Heights, and other things to the detriment of the Palestinians. He is on record as saying that Israel should be able to "finish the job".
There will be no return to the JCPOA with Iran. On the contrary, he is on record as suggesting that the U.S. bomb Iran.
It is amazing how many pundits look at Mr. Trump as being "the answer", when he was not "the answer" when he was President. He likes to tout the Abraham Accords, that son in law , Jared (the future developer of Gaza beach fronts) Kushner "negotiated", without the presence of not one single Palestinians representative being there.
The Biden administration has been abysmal. A second Trump administration will also be abysmal.
He cancelled the Clean Water Act. Has said that in his second administration he will get rid of the EPA and NOAA. "Drill baby Drill", along with opening coal mining and coal use for powering electrical power plants. (not that Harris would do much different, seeing as Mr. Biden signed off on more oil leases than Trump did).
No, things will remain as they are, but with revenge by Trump, such as "we have never seen before".
Israel will continue on is merry murderous way. Our "representatives", save for a few like Thomas Massie, one brave Republican.
God help us all. Trump will be victorious. Harris will whine, and the realization will hit when the key to her winning was right there in Gaza. Unfortunately, she is married to Doug Emhoff. Unfortunately, the DNC hitched up to the wrong horse (pun not intended, after listening to her laugh). Again. The DNC will whine the next4 years. I have no sympathy. If the DNC had shown real sympathy for Palestinians and had not foolheartedly gone after Russia to "bleed" it, she may have won.
Early reports indicate that the Democrats are getting whipped everywhere. TS.
