Israeli Attacks Kill at Least 10 in Southern Lebanon

Eight Hezbollah members among the killed, according to reports

Israel carried out air raids targeting border areas around southern Lebanon on Friday, with local sources reporting that they were hitting “anything that moves in the field.” At least 10 people were reported killed, eight of them Hezbollah members.

Strikes were reported in Tayr Harfa, Ayta al-Jabal, Mays al-Jabal, and Aitaroun. An Israeli drone strike was also reported in the Tyre District. Israel said one of the targets was named Muhammad Najam, and that he was affiliated with Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit.

Among the slain in the Ayta al-Jabal strike was Najam, but also a young child and another person. Hezbollah issued a statement amid the strikes confirming that five of their members were killed.

Israel’s attacks were reportedly a retaliation from Hezbollah firing missiles at the Mount Meron air base. Hezbollah responded to the Israeli killings by firing more rockets against northern Israel, many of them against the area of Safed.

Israel’s military confirmed that two of the missiles fired at Mount Meron scored direct hits. They insisted that the base’s capacity and detection system remained intact after the strike, and is still in operation.

Israel and Hezbollah have been trading fired against one another since October, with the sides escalating dramatically in recent months. Lebanon reported that there have been 2,000 casualties on their side of the border since the fighting began. The report came out earlier this week, and does not include today’s casualties.
