Israeli Airstrikes Target Central Syria, Wounding Four Soldiers

The strikes come as tensions are soaring in the region

Israeli airstrikes targeted central Syria on Thursday as tensions are soaring in the region amid anticipation of an Iranian reprisal attack on Israel.

A Syrian military source told Al Mayadeen that the strikes targeted several military sites and injured four Syrian soldiers. The strike was launched at about 8:55 pm local time from the direction of northern Lebanon.

Israel typically does not comment on its airstrikes in Syria, and the Israeli military declined to give a statement to Reuters when asked about the attack.

Israel has bombed Syria with impunity for years and significantly ramped up its attacks on the country Since October 7. Some of its strikes in Syria have targeted Iranians, including the April 1 bombing of Iran’s consulate in Damascus, which provoked the first-ever direct Iranian attack on Israeli territory.

Also on Thursday, clashes in eastern Syria’s Deir Ezzor province between pro-government Arab tribesmen and the US-backed Kurdish SDF continued. Al Mayadeen reported that the Syrian Army shelled SDF positions and that the US supported SDF artillery strikes.

The Syrian Arab tribesmen launched an operation against the SDF early Wednesday, and the attacks mark the heaviest clashes between the two sides since they engaged in multiple battles last year.
