A hostage and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas won’t happen unless the US puts pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, The Times of Israel reported on Wednesday.
The report cited unnamed Arab officials from Egypt and Qatar, the countries that have been mediating the talks between Israel and Hamas. They said Netanyahu is the main obstacle to an agreement.
One of the Arab officials said the US is the only party with enough leverage to get Netanyahu to agree to a deal since the US is Israel’s main weapons supplier. The official said the US could apply pressure by blaming Netanyahu publicly, but US officials have refused to do so even as it’s become clear the Israeli leader has been sabotaging the chances of a deal.
After President Biden unveiled a ceasefire proposal that was on the table at the end of May, the US said Hamas was the only obstacle to an agreement being reached even as Netanyahu publicly rejected a permanent ceasefire, which was part of the second phase of the deal.
Netanyahu’s comments made Hamas ask for a commitment to a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal up front. After Hamas conceded and agreed to vague enough language that wouldn’t commit Israel to a permanent ceasefire, Netanyahu added new demands, including indefinite Israeli control of the Gaza-Egypt border and a screening mechanism for Palestinians returning to north Gaza.
Israeli officials, including Mossad Director David Barnea, who has been leading negotiations, said Netanyahu’s demands would thwart a deal. But US officials still refuse to name Netanyahu as an obstacle to talks even after he assassinated Hamas’s political chief, Ismail Haniyeh, which has put the negotiations on hold.
White House National Security Advisor John Kirby said Wednesday that it was up to Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’s leader in Gaza, who was named as Haniyeh’s replacement, to agree to a deal. “And as the chief decision-maker, [Sinwar] needs to decide now to take this deal, to get a ceasefire in place, to get some of those hostages home, and to get us all an opportunity to get more humanitarian assistance in. He needs to accept the deal,” Kirby said.
When asked if Netanyahu was refusing to sign a deal, Kirby dodged the question. “I’ll say it again: There’s a proposal that is on the table. It’s a good proposal. It’ll get us a six-week ceasefire, or get us the most at — the most vulnerable hostages out,” he said.
Earlier this week, Israeli media reported that the US is willing to give Israel a guarantee that it could restart the genocidal war in Gaza after the first phase of any hostage deal.
And the US won't pressure Israel unless the antiwar movement pressures the US government. The best pressure tool we have is to refuse to give our votes to any candidate supports military aid to Israel and does not oppose genocide.
That is how we ended the genocide in Vietnam and is how we can end the genocide in Gaza.
Any antiwar movement that was, Obama snuffed it out. And any antiwar movement left is on this websites comment section.
This Spring several hundred thousand people voter for uncommitted delegate to the Democratic Convention in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Over 100 cities, towns, villages and counties passed resolutions demanding an immediate ceasefire. . 3,200 students were arrested at campus Gaza demonstrations attended by tens of thousands of students. Hundreds of labor unions and over 100 city, county, town and village governing bodies passed resolutions calling for a ceasefire. And Code Pink; antiwar organizations have appeared at rail terminals, the Capitol and throughout the country, McDonalds is one of several BDS targets whose shares are falling in response to boycott actions. I would say there is quite an antiwar movement beyond this list.
Not enough yet, though.
Not even close.
Agreed. And we didn't vote against the Vietnam war. We voted for a guy who said he would stop it after he spent 4 more years bombing and not stopping it.
The Antiwar spirit lives in our hearts.
But this is not war, l't is a GENOCIDE!
In a war opposing militaries kill each othef. But in Gaza the only military of a State, The IDF is killing inhabitants and not an opposing military. So it is a GENOCIDE. Any fool can see its a GENOCIDE Except the 2 UN Courts!
Certainly makes me wonder who controls those courts. We know it isn't Russia, because they almost instantly indicted them for taking Children out of the war zone to make them safe. But bombing Children & KILLING THEM IN their SCHOOLS killing tens of thousands of tjem seems to be A O.K.with the UN courts.
DOES THIS MAKE YOU WONDER WHO CONTROLS THE UN COURTS?
Don't expect any justice soon or ever! There is no big money in JUSTICE OR HONESTY… THE BIG BUCKS ARE IN MURDER & THEFT LIKE THE VALUABLE WATERFRONT LAND OF GAZA…..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"And any antiwar movement left is on this websites comment section." Antiwar readership is very small less than million hits a month. Also about only half the readership is from the USA. Look at similarweb.com to get the web traffic data for this site and others.
What’s your point agent?
Snuffed out Occupy. Snuffed out homeowners, while bailing out the banks that caused the mess in 2008-2009. Provided more weapons for the "surge" in Afghanistan. Admitted that he was "good at killing" with his drone strikes, even killing American citizens not brought on charges. A real "Hope" president, he was.
His hope is in the Zionists like Rahm Emanuel his first pick as president.. I knew we were in trouble the moment I saw that pick. But the O, for me he was a ZERO. Put in Victoria Nuland the Architect of this Ukraine was!! One would think it would wreck her chancse, but don't bet on it!!!!!!!!!!!
Code Pink? Veterans for peace? Jewish Voices for Peace?
Just a shadow of the former.
I am not sure your idea will stop the genocide, but it's a good plan until the No.v. election…!!!!!
Include american support to Ukraine that nobody want. We need that pressure too.
Good luck with that plan. I hate you tell this but the Gaza war is not on the top or even close to top of the problems the USA is facing.
Vietnam was not the top concern of most Americans until around 1967. It takes a while to have an impact on an imperial power deluded about the power of its own military. As long as the Palestinians continue to resist, they will eventually win. First in America and then against Israel. Asymmetric wars of national resistance are determined by hears and minds, not force of arms. After this election the Democrats will realize they can’t take the antiwar and Palestinian solidarity voters for granted.
Vietnam became my concern in 1965.
American are not dying in Gaza. Big difference than Vietnam.
What is your definition of Palestinians winning?
American public opinion has already decisively shifted against Israel. It is only a matter of time before public opinion gets translated into votes.
In asymmetric wars of national resistance the invader needs to conquer territory, occupy territory , defeat the indigenous resistance and pacify the conquered territory to win.
In asymmetric wars of national resistance the indigenous defender needs to survive and continue to resist. If the resistance continues the invading power will eventually leave.
Victories by the invading power on the battlefield don’t change the dynamic.
Once the resistance wins the hearts and minds of the indigenous people it cannot be defeated because every successful attack by the invader increases support for the resistance.
Typically in asymmetric wars the indigenous defender sustains much heavier casualties than the more powerful invader. For example, the Vietnamese lost 2 million people while the USA sustained 58,000 casualties, the French had 25,000 casualties while the FLN lost between 500,000 and 1.5 million people. But the casualties only made the resistance stronger. As long as the resistance keeps fighting and continues to have popular support, it will win even if it can’t win on the battlefield.
Persistent resistance creates a political crisis withing the military and the polity of the invading power that eventually causes the invading power to withdraw.
Hamas has won the hearts and minds of their people. After 17 years of siege and almost a year of assault they are still fighting back. They have won. It just may take a long time for the Zionists to accept defeat.
It's not? Look at the financial drain on the U.S.. Look at the deficit at $35 trillion. The Gaza "war" may expand many fold, if the crazed nation of Israel launches attacks on Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, or uses one or more of its tactical nukes.
It is not. If you watch any TV you see political ads constantly. Have you seen any mention of the Gaza war in any of those ads? It may be important to you, but not many in the USA.
Tell us your list Tim. Some of us would like hear it…
FOR ME THE GAZA GENOCIDE IS DESTROYING AMERICAS STANDING IN THE WORLD!!!! Just as the German GENOCIDE OF THE Jews took out the Germans. Who wants to do business with the MASS MURDERERS OF WOMEN & CHILDREN!!!!!! & MURDERS OF THE YOUNG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Food, water, shelter! For all people!
End wars now!
Lacking conscienceness?!
Peace on Earth and Goodwill to all of humanity!
How is the USA going to stop Israel from war crimes when most of the U.S. government is filled with dual-citizenship American Israelis? Nutty Yahoo didn't stop October 7 (as he could have easily!) and now he won't stop the carnage that was "justified" by the October 7 lie!
Some wars are necessary to get peace.
Very few. And certainly not that Russian unwarranted attack on Ukraine.
Tim, Don Julio, jake, all three of your psychological brothers of your mind are morons.
Don''t forget the three names Don Bacon, Don Julio & Lenimie Alpaca that Have been used by the same moron who thinks Russia should let NATO put nukes on Russias border. Just like JFK let Russia put nukes in Cuba…. Not likely and sad to see Ukraine being destroyed, but fools who get paid to be stupid are a toll on us all
RUSSIA DONT NEED NO STINKEN WARRANT!!!! EXITENTIAL THREATS ARE WAR WARRANTS PER SE…!!!!! Stupid UKIES got used and are paying a terrible price for their ignorance. Of course their leaders who led them into this mess are getting rich. Buying premium real estate worldwide with the billions of America BRIBES….!!!!!!!!!
Maybe true some wars are justified!!
But not GENICIDE!!! The Geveva convention allows wars, but says there is no justification for GENOCIDE or is there any forgiveness, only trial by the ICC, IJC & perhaps G-d…!!!!
Food, water, shelter and not being held hostage.
As compared to living in an outdoor prison/concentration camp that already was food insecure with over 90% of their drinking water contaminated BEFORE OCT 7th?
As usual, you are full of more crap than a Christmas goose.
DUH! About time someone stated what has been naked truth since October 7, 2023.
Everyone, get it through your heads. A major Middle East war is now INEVITABLE.
Read my lips: This was has been PLANNED since BEFORE October 7, 2023. EVERYTHING that has occurred since (except Israel's dismal failure to damage Hamas) has been planned, including all the farce about "Biden is furious with Netanyahu" and "Netanyahu hates Biden" bullshit. Those two have known each other for forty years – they know exactly who they're dealing with. Biden is an ardent Zionist and warmonger just like Netanyahu.
As was pointed out recently, I think it was by Larry Johnson, the assassination of Haniya was coordinated with the US because the movement of US ships and other assets occurred immediately after the assassination and that is not possible without ordering that movement BEFORE the assassination. More proof that this entire war is PLANNED – by BOTH sides
If three carriers show up, then it is on. Hezbollah knows it. Iran knows it. Turkey knows it. Shia and Sunni have forged a bond, the first in 1400 years. Media in the U.S. will blame Iran. So it goes.
Cowards and traitors.
Bought off, just as the rest of our true blue allies are across the globe.
US will not pressure Israel. We know that.
And who is pressuring Hamas?
Pressuring them to do what, sign their own death warrant?
Israel. Seventy-five years of occupation. More then 16 years of a brutal blockade. IDF killing of thousand of Palestinians (from 2000 to 7Oct, the IDF killed 2300 Palestinian children), conducted raids, during which young Palestinian men were abducted as "detainees", without charges. The pressure of being born in a concentration camp. More than 60% of Palestinian men unemployed, with no chance of marriage. Food restrictions, even potato chips and chocolate! That is pressure. Hamas knows that if there is a ceasefire for exchange of hostages, there will be a continuation by Israel of the attacks, the genocide. The Biden administration has given Israel the OK to do so. Who is under pressure???? You are a moron.
Sounds like a used car salesman…! Trying to corner your opponent…!
Hamas has agreed to deal after deal. Netanyahu pulled out of his *ss some reason to stop it. Rinse, repeat.
We are the key. One phone call. Ordering an embargo of any and all weapons. Kamal has said she was against an embargo. There you have it. There will be no demonstrable change in our approach to anything. She is married to Doug Emhoff, for G-d sake!
What a joke. Words, words, and more words…. Meanwhile, innocent people die. The Arab leadership is bought and paid for, just as our own government is.
It's a moral imperative of All Arab nations to put pressure on Israel, threaten to cut ties, etc., for a potential ceasefire…!
If they're waiting for US to put that pressure, they should know by now that won't happen…!
