The US has criticized the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) ruling that said the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and must come to an end, claiming it impedes a two-state solution.
“We are concerned that the breadth of the court’s opinion will complicate efforts to resolve the conflict and bring about an urgently needed just and lasting peace, with two states living side-by-side in peace and security,” a State Department spokesperson told Reuters in an email on Saturday.
The spokesperson said the ICJ ruling, which was a non-binding opinion, was “inconsistent with the established framework.”
In contrast, the US refused to condemn the Israeli Knesset passing a resolution that rejects the establishment of a Palestinian state west of the Jordan River, which covers all of the occupied territories.
“I’ll let Israeli officials speak to their own legislative chamber and the actions that that chamber takes,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said about the Knesset vote. He claimed the US was still committed to a two-state solution, but the US continues to back an Israeli government that’s explicitly opposed to the idea.
The ICJ ruling said the establishment and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem amounted to annexation. Since October 7, Israeli settlers have stepped up their attacks on Palestinians to steal their homes, and the Israeli government has approved the largest land grab in the West Bank in 30 years.
In Gaza, the Israeli military controls about 26% of the territory and has demolished buildings and destroyed agricultural land in those areas, potentially paving the way for new Jewish settlements.
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who is also the minister in charge of settlement expansion in the West Bank, has called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to formally annex the territory in response to the ICJ ruling.
It's a good thing Biden stepped down as the Democratic Presidential Nominee. Harris will run in his place but she'll be the same as he is on Israel, Ukraine and many other issues. Whitmer and Newsom praised Biden and said he's been a great president and he has been the biggest warmongering genocidal president in US History. They'd have the same disastrous foreign policy as Biden and Trump.
I wish the Duopoly Parties would fall into a bottomless pit.
Lol, having lived my entire life in the south I have to suggest our political pests present no less an eradication challenge than do roaches and mosquitoes. Both rank in the top 5 in eradication difficulty; roaches are #1 but mosquitoes enjoy the additional distinction of being the most deadly species on the planet. With all they have in common I'm convinced all three would survive your bottomless pit 🙂
Meet the new puppet same as the old puppet. And, the Wash. puppet show goes on and on. I also have no faith in Trump. They're all frauds and strumpets for donations.
"They're all frauds and strumpets for donations."
Donations, stock tips, dubious speaking fees, favors for relatives, favors for friends, post retirement favors, etc.
The list goes on and on.
Gore Vidal held that politics is a compound word, consisting of poli, which is Greek for many, combined with tics, which are blood sucking insects.
The ICJ Advisory opinion is a earthquake. Genocide enablers anywhere in the world , both institutions and enablers, can now be sued for damages caused by the occupation.
Imagine Ron Lauder or Columbia University getting sued in a Spainish or Norwegian court. Every EU and EFA country plus many others respects their court judgements. That means asset seizures and travel bans etc. etc.
It’s going to be a target rich environment for Lawfare. The Likud is to blame for this situation.
Yes, yes, … the ICJ is a fully constituted organ of the UN of which the USI is a charter member. Therefore its rulings have the force of law here. And there's a plethora of aggrieved US citizen refugees from Palestine whose cases would have to be accepted by the Federal Courts.
What would happen if UNRWA now filed a lawsuit in say, Belgian, sueing the IDF for damages ?
A beautiful contratemps!
But doubtless it would get the same justice from Belgian courts, as Assange from the English, or the torture victims American.
“Plate sin with gold and the strongest lance of Justice hurtless falls.
Arm it in rags, and a pygmy’s straw would pierce it.”
The Belgian FM announced full support of the ICJ advisory opinion on Monday.
My immediate thought reading this was satirical, that of the US's reckless and ruinous resolution to world domination having become “a psychological disorder infecting the entirety of western leadership,” and set about naming it. Under contemplation satire was lost.
While the global majority presses ever-forward reforming a historically inequitable and consequently dysfunctional world order into a new multi-nodal world of equal sovereigns accountable under international law and the UN Charter, the US response to the ICJ ruling exemplifies the quite opposite status quo, as well the law of inertia in international relations. The former hegemon will doubtless continue practice of it's self-proclaimed exceptionalism thus exemption to global norms and laws until a force amasses to alter or stop it.
In a recent JudgeNap-Mearsheimer discussion of Blinken’s patterned mendacity Mearsh opined the belief it isn't intentional untruth but delusion. Maybe delusion better explains the US's audacious assertion, this landmark ICJ decision complicates “efforts to resolve the conflict,” to a world that's watched 57 years of conflict resolution ignoring, facilitating and tacitly supporting Israel’s ever-expanding illegal annexation of Palestinian territory. Ntm the decades of dehumanized brutality that have resulted in this genocide with seamless US complicity.
I have for quite some time fully believed had but just one of the three, John, Martin or Bobby, survived their assassinations we'd be living in a very different country now. I may not be alone given how deeply some otherwise responsibles are delving into conspiracies following the Trump assassination attempt.
Reverie is never lost on me…!
@Jill Stein 2024!
“a psychological disorder infecting the entirety of western leadership” – agreed. I live in Europe, the Netherlands to be specific, and politicians here literally parrot the US regime. I am collecting examples. When Rutte came into view as next NATO secretary general it got worse – anxiously, meticulously talking as his master talks.
"(…) it isn't intentional untruth but delusion."
I call that the threefold delusion: the West is good, western governments and world government by the West is good, and western politicians are good.
The threefold delusion makes it impossible for most western politicians to face the truth.
What happened to the Dutch Provos? Same in the USA, there's no anti-war faction in either party or the people in general.
@ Lily Sandoz – • Some of those Provos, grown old, have also grown warlike.
• A right wing fringe party Forum for democracy challenges the West's narrative – referring to the same sources that we know.
• The Socialist Party does challenge NATO, yet was and is in favor of arming Ukraine.
• Van Haga of BVNL (right wing) said "Citizens don't want war, politicians want war", and then he challenged Rutte whether he was willing to die for Ukraine. Rutte didn't reply and Van Haga did not get reelected to parliament.
Thanks!
First, Kudos! “The Threefold Delusion“ – correct, concise, compelling and memorably catchy – you are a natural communicator! Prone to verbosity I’ve always greatly admired, and envied, those with your skill. Second, from afar, I’ve never visited, but have been saddened by what I’ve gleaned of the apparent changes in your part of the world with it’s great heritage of enlightened forward-thinking and tolerance. We need less of the world emulating our leaders, an oxymoron if any, than the opposite. How do “the people” take the changes?
@ Jill Stein 2024! Thank you!
The mass of the people take in propaganda; politicians and mainstream media only spread the West's narrative, and politicians stubbornly refuse to acknowledge any other views.
However, on social media you see quite a lot of reactions such as on this Antiwar forum.
You write "We need less of the world emulating our leaders, an oxymoron if any, than the opposite." There is a mood of 'the people vs the leaders' here, but 'the people' are too amorphous and unorganized – and lacking spokespersons with a concise, clear narrative – to form a focused force to be reckoned with.
It's interesting to compare the USA and Europe in this. In the USA, the two party system probably is a great obstacle to change, so it's great that you support Jill Stein!
ICJ: "You're actions are illegal." The "West:" "Your opinion is inconsistent and non-binding. Israel has the right to continue Palestinian genocide, which is not a genocide in our opinion." ICJ: "We agree. We just had to say something because it looks like genocide to the rest of the world. Please keep paying our salaries. We'll not bother you again until you finish the Palestinian genocide."
Tragically, this made me laugh out loud. :-/
Inserting one’s head up its own arse is not even a clever trick, is it?….
Dear US, make a better effort at objectivity and you will save us ALL a lot of time and indeed money (shekels).
The US as Israel continue to be in denial regarding the Israeli occupation and engaged in delusional rationalization.
“We are concerned that the breadth of the court’s opinion will complicate efforts to resolve the conflict and bring about an urgently needed just and lasting peace, with two states living side-by-side in peace and security,” a State Department spokesperson told Reuters in an email on Saturday.”

Sure, why not. But this won't complicate things at all:
Israel To Send Delegation to Hostage Deal Talks With Netanyahu’s New Demands
The "demands" will be the usual flatulence to prevent any cease fire. That will not happen until all Palestinians are either crushed, vaporized, or run off.
The double standard is getting to be intolerable.
It already is intolerable, of course our war criminals in DC and Tel Aviv would not know it.
What a crock of crap excuse…!
It exactly does the opposite…!
@ netman The US regime habitually reacts like that. When South Africa turned to the ICJ accusing Israel of genocide, Blinken called it 'unhelpful'.
We should ask, what took ICJ so long, the brutal illegal occupation did not start just yesterday or OCT, 7.
@ Lysistrata Good question. Do you know whether the ICJ takes the initiative to issue judgments? If not, then it depends on some country to take the initiative to start a case, like South Africa has done.
The USA controls the institution. It also took a government like SA to take it to court, if nothing else, they force the Western Democracies to look in the mirror and see how ugly and criminal they really are.
Yes, two state solution that US is talking about has one major flaw. On what territory exactly is the Palestinian state to be located as Israel is annexing mire and more land. ICJ ruling on the illegality of endless occupation was the key. Occupations that are not part of a war, have to have an end. Moreover, occupation cannot gradually transform into ennexation, Conclusions are clear. But more importantly — UN General Assembly has asked for the opinion by ICJ, UN court set up for such purposes. The real question is — the reason for the request. There are possibly many reasons, but one stands out as a real possibility. UN provides for General Asasebly to act when Security Council is paralized. General Assembly can expel or suspend a country from UN. with a two third majority plus 1. The vote for Palestinian statehood was the beginning. The vote on its terrotorial rights is even more important. Voting for an abstraction, the state, is not enough. The ruling on Palestinian territorial rights is confirmation of Palestinian statehood on the occupied territories.
The Palestinian State is so much hot air and it's always been that.
The chances for a one state solution were never lower than they are now, that is also true of a 2 state solution. Israeli children are filled with unbelievable hate for Palestinian people taught in their homes and schools.
How must the Palestinians feel after all the brutality they experienced, a traumatized nation like no other in history, the trauma the children experience is beyond our imagination. To think, amputations, including children, without anesthetics, that alone is unthinkable, but doctors report it, we know they lack medical care, it must be true. The ISRAELIS are HUMAN ANIMALS the only explanation. Animals from the animal kingdom don't do that to their own kind, not even other arts, even cats and dogs are friends.
America lives in a bubble. How many realities can it deny before everything blows up in our faces? 1) Israel is already being defeated militarily 2) unprecedented intl. legal rulings is laying the ground work for its eventual dismantling as a state. 3) its reputation in the world is shattered beyond repair. 4) its economy is slowly imploding due to war of attrition and BDS and 5) and the world's nations overwhelmingly recognize Palestine. ….and the US is saying it impedes a two state solution. Sorry to break it to you but its a one state solution of Palestine.
Like I previously said, Wash. will be right there to bail them out. There's no limit on how much the US Taxpayers must pay out to make the world safe for Zionism and its agenda.
It was instructive watching an Israeli commentator on Israeli TV several months back. He was saying we are losing the war and we will lose. He said the Muslims have a word sabr (patience) in Arabic which didn't have an equivalent in Hebrew. The Middle East will outlast the zionists and the Americans. Israel and the US will leave the ME. But I'm willing to bet that its sooner rather than later.
Well, Washington at least is consistent with their policy of the ongoing genocide in Palestine. And, it looks like it won't stop until the last drop of blood flows into the streets. Shame on those who support this slaughter.
Duh! Who is surprised?
Harris as POTUS will carry on the support of the genocide in Gaza. You have to remember, her husband is Doug Emhoff. CNN calls him "A leader in the battle against antisemitism. 100% in support of the genocide in Gaza. No need for a Mr. Trump to see that the Zionists "finish the job", when we will have Prez Harris (perhaps).
I hope that one day, in the not too distant future, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel is prosecuted for complicity in genocide.
The ICC can do it, as it now threatens to do to the Israeli leadership, so extending that to the most public enablers is a reasonable step.
But the Knesset has just voted to terminate the Two State Solution, so what is Uncle Sam talking about?
November 27, 1947, U.N. General Assembly resolution 181: (The USA voted for) recommended that Palestine be divided into an Arab state, a Jewish state, and a separate international zone "corpus separatum" for Jerusalem as a way to avoid conflicts between Arab and Jew over their political claims to Jerusalem, and among the three monotheist religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, over their attachments to religious sites.
The criminal scum ruling in DC and Tel Aviv know no shame.
Morally they are on a par with Hitler if not worse.
