Israeli Military Says Soldier Killed During Raid Into Gaza

Hamas says it repelled an Israeli ground raid near Khan Younis

The Israeli military said Sunday that one Israeli soldier was killed and three were injured by an anti-tank missile during a raid into the besieged Gaza Strip.

The statement from the Israeli military came as the Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, said on Telegram that it had repelled an Israeli ground raid.

“An IDF (Israel Defense Forces) soldier was killed, one was moderately injured, and two were lightly injured as a result of an anti-tank missile launched toward an IDF tank and an engineering vehicle,” the Israeli military said.

The fighting took place near Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza. Hamas said its fighters destroyed an Israeli tank and two bulldozers during the raid. The Israeli military said an IDF tank fired back at militants in the besieged enclave.

According to CNN, the incident appeared to be one of the first times the Israeli military and Hamas fought on the ground in Gaza since Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7.

The incident occurred as Israel said it was intensifying its airstrikes in Gaza ahead of an expected ground invasion. “We will deepen our attacks to minimize the dangers to our forces in the next stages of the war. We are going to increase the attacks from today,” said IDF spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.

Israel’s onslaught on Gaza, one of the most densely populated places on earth, has killed over 4,000 Palestinians, including over 1,000 children. A ground invasion will also incur a huge civilian death toll.
