China on Thursday responded to a US call for the resumption of military communication channels that Beijing suspended in response to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) visiting Taiwan in August.
Tan Kefei, a spokesman for the Chinese Defense Ministry, said that the US was responsible for the channels being suspended and that Washington must respect China’s concerns for them to be resumed.
“If the US side wants to improve military communication between China and the US, then it should match words with deeds, demonstrate its sincerity, and earnestly respect China’s interests and major concerns, and remove the negative factors that impede the development of ties between the two militaries,” Tan said, according to The South China Morning Post.
After Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China called off three separate dialogues with the US military, but other lines of communication remain open. Earlier this month, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke with his Chinese counterpart, Wei Fenghe, and the two military leaders agreed communication was important.
Austin has said the Pentagon is working to reestablish the channels that were suspended. But at the same time, the US is looking to significantly increase support for Taiwan despite Beijing’s warnings over the issue. Tan said that the US needs to understand China’s “red lines.”
With an increased US military presence in the South China Sea and Taiwan, less communication between the two militaries increases the risk of an accident. And with US-China relations at their lowest point in decades, an accident could potentially spiral into a conflict.
The more weapons we sell to Taiwan and support the separatists, the more likely war will start and Taiwan will actually lose its defacto autonomy (even the hawks’ own war simulations show that Taiwan will lose by a landslide, regardless of our intervention). Just look at our horrible record of “deterrence by arms sales and provocations”, the latest stark example being Ukraine. Stop the constant and needless provocations and keep the peace over the Taiwan Strait with a real and lasting One China policy instead of this farce we are running.
Taiwan can only be taken by China if the US allows it. It US defends Taiwan China cannot take it by force.
You’re crazy. The US couldn’t stop it without starting WW3.
Sure they can. Unless the Chinese have learn to walk on water getting a large army across the straight is not an easy task.
We do not care about any country, ally or not. Witness what we are allowing in Ukraine. In April, 2022, we stopped negotiations between Ukraine and Russia . Russia wanted to negotiate in December, 2021. If we care so little about Ukraine, what do you think about our caring about Taiwan?
That is interesting, but you can not take a single point of data and claim that applies to every country in every case.
Armchairs and Generals…. An armchair does not a general make.
Armchairs and Generals…. An armchair does not a general make.
Agreed. That is why a simple looking at numbers never tell the full story. No better example than current Ukraine war. On paper it looked like a “cake walk” for Russia. The same with Taiwan situation, amateur’s don’t understand the logistic problem that China will face in moving an army across open water. If one is interested, study the amount of planning and ships needed for D-day. Now double that as it would take 300,000 troops to overcome Taiwan’s army. Oh by the way, in D-day they had complete control of the air and sea. That would be unlikely in this case.
Taiwan is intent on losing their autonomy to either China or the US./
This US pattern will do to Taiwan what it has done to Ukraine — utter destruction of them, but of some strategic positioning advantage to the US in terms of alliances and market controls and weapons sales.
Just what is the US purpose overall, in this situation. Flexing military muscle to achieve what? Dominance? To what purpose…? That China is still open to dialogue is somewhat reassuring. It’s time to talk and get this situation toned down…. And keep Pelosi at home, she doesn’t make a very good envoy… And remember, “conflict” is a dangerous word, when we are dealing with two nuclear countries…
Someone broke into their residence and went after her husband with a hammer.
I understand that, my reference was simply not to let her travel….
