Over 160 House Republicans Threaten to Sabotage Iran Deal

In a letter to Biden, the lawmakers said he doesn't have the power to give Iran guarantees that sanctions won't be reimposed

Over 160 House Republicans sent a letter to President Biden threatening to do everything they can to sabotage an agreement with Iran if it is not approved by Congress.

Iran is seeking guarantees that the next president won’t withdraw from the nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA. But since the JCPOA is not a treaty, future administrations are not bound by it, something the lawmakers pointed out to Biden.

“We feel compelled to remind you that you do not have the power to provide any such ‘guarantee,'” the letter reads. “Indeed, if you forge an agreement with the Supreme Leader of Iran without formal congressional approval, it will be temporary and non-binding.”

The lawmakers said a new agreement with Iran would have the “same fate” as the JCPOA did, referring to the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the deal in 2018. They demanded that Biden submit the agreement with Iran to Congress for a 30-day approval period.

If Biden doesn’t seek the approval of Congress, the Republicans said they would push for renewed sanctions on Iran. They would also oppose rescinding the designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “foreign terrorist organization.”

Earlier this month, a group of 33 Senate Republicans sent a similar letter to President Biden, warning that an agreement with Iran “will likely be torn up” in the opening days of the next US administration.
