Overnight, ISIS fighters attacked an army base in Iraq’s Diyala Province, killing 11 soldiers. There was no word of ISIS casualties.
Diyala Governor Muthanna Tamimi confirmed the toll, and faulted the troops for negligence, saying they were caught unprepared despite the base being fortified.
ISIS no longer has a large presence in Iraq, but continues to be able to carry out smaller attacks. These strikes raise concern about the government’s security.
Among smaller attacks, this was the most significant in months, hitting a military base and then making off into the countryside before reinforcements could be mustered.
