Yemen Fighting Escalates in Southern Shabwah Province

Pro-Saudi forces claim gains

Fighting is escalating in the Shabwah Province, with pro-Saudi forces claiming to have recovered substantial territory from the Houthis in the area. This comes after reports of 70 killed Tuesday.

The territory was described by the Houthis as largely their supply lines supporting the Maarib offensive. The Houthis had similarly taken territory in Shabwah which was also supply lines for the pro-Saudi forces.

All of these fights loom large in the battle for Maarib City, which continues to rage. The Houthis reported that one of their key leaders, Ahmad al-Hamza, was killed in Maarib.

Hamza was serving as a vice governor for the Houthi faction in Shabwah, and while the details aren’t clear, he was reportedly caught up in a Saudi airstrike against his convoy.
