US officials told Reuters Friday that the Biden administration is preparing to hit Nicaragua with new sanctions over the upcoming presidential election that will be held Sunday.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is expected to win Sunday, and the US has already deemed the election a “sham” even though it hasn’t happened yet. An unnamed State Department official said the planned sanctions would limit certain trade “interactions” with Nicaragua.
Sanctioning Nicaragua has strong bipartisan support in Washington. Earlier this week, the House passed a bill that would implement more sanctions on Nicaragua in a vote of 387 to 35. Last week, the legislation easily passed through the Senate and it is expected to be signed into law by President Biden.
US policy towards Nicaragua is following a familiar script. During the Trump administration, the US put Venezuela under crushing sanctions after claiming election fraud. Since 2019, the US has recognized Juan Guaido as president of Venezuela even though Nicolas Maduro holds the office.
Years later, the sanctions regime in Venezuela has done nothing to change the government in Caracas but has had a devastating impact on the civilian population.
If he wins Sunday, it would be Ortega would serve a fourth term as president. In 2014, Nicaragua’s National Assembly got rid of term limits allowing Ortega to run for a third term in 2016.

The White House did not immediately respond to a question of whether Biden would sign the legislation, which was introduced by Senator Bob Menendez, Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

These power hungry elites have an insatiable lust for domination, for experimentation, and contempt for deplorable little people that bring food to their table, make chairs to place their superior hind ends on.
People are deplored for not knowing how to get power, and are satisfied by being told tales and admiring own inferiority.
People who crave power, are not intelligent nor knowledgeable. They just have NO psychological barriers to seeing human beings as a mere raw material to be used and controlled for personal gain.
The advancements of state institutions that brought us legal security — has been gradually taken over by such psychologically deficient “superiors”. For a while, they played by the rules at home, never abroad. No more.
Now, they are redefining the very institutions of state to suit their own need for control. And teaching like-minded in other countries how to do it at home.
But surprises happen. What happened in Virginia elections has NOTHING to do with Republicans and their newly found attractiveness with voters. Nothing.
It was the case of rejecting the candidate’s view of parents as BACKWARD for doubting controversial education practices. And just after the Democrat establishment came down on one father’ distraught and unruly behavior in School Board meeting — calling such people TERRORISTS — an investigation into the case resulted in a conviction proving his daughter’s assertions.
The news spread as a wildfire — resulting in a motivated vote resurgence.
This is an example of the blind spots imperial policies have. Unfortunately , voters are just as likely to mistake this phenomena for “Republican” win, and fall back into believing that Republicans, the junior partner in the empire, will save them. How sad, but predictable.
