Overnight Thursday Israeli warplanes carried out attacks against the Syrian capital of Damascus and nearby Homs. As is so often the case, the Israeli planes used Lebanese airspace to attack Syria.
This is a problem most of the time, and was even more perilous this time, as a pair of civilian airliners had to be rerouted. Violating Lebanese airspace is one thing, endangering aircraft is quite another.
Lebanese PM Hassan Diab has instructed the ambassador to the UN to raise a complaint about the attack, and the “repeated infringements on Lebanon’s sovereignty by Israel.”
The attack fired an estimated 24 missiles at targets in Syria, killing four who were identified as “pro-Iran fighters.” Russia reported that 22 out of 24 missiles were successfully intercepted by the Syrian air defenses.
That Russia is commenting is noteworthy, because Russia has been trying to curtail the number of Israeli attacks on Syria. Up until this week, Israel had not launched an attack in nearly a month,
When reports of Russia wanting to stop the strike first went public, Israeli strikes stopped cold. This week’s first attack, missile fire at Quineitra, seemed to be testing the environment, and when there was no Russian reaction, Israel almost immediately launched a bigger, more ambitious attack. It seems they’re back to the old policy on strikes.
As is generally the case, Israel did not comment on the strike, nor have they clarified any policy changes. That they’ve carried out the strikes, however, suggests they may be back to striking regularly, or at least gauging Russia’s reaction, or lack thereof.
“Al Qaeda’s Airforce Attack Syria Through Lebanese Airspace; Forced Civilian Planes to Reroute,” there, I fixed it.
War monger Israel on US welfare, temporarily.
we should be deeply ashamed of ourselves and our corrupt government.
Israel has kind of normalized this aggressive behavior…
and as usual, the civilized world stands by and does NOTHING………….
The civilized world then, is no longer civilized.
It took a few years for the demons to come home to roost, but the West is descending into autocratic tyranny under COVID-1984.
Appropriately, no-one will care if we kill ourselves off. Slowly.
Why can’t Russia tell Israel, in the friendliest of terms, that if they do one more unprovoked airstrike on their ally, Syria, they will make what Israel does to their outdoor prison Gaza look like a Sunday picnic?
“cause Russia has more important things to take care of.
Your replies leave me to believe that you probably don’t have “several more degrees” than I do as you once stated. You did edit that statement to something completely different but my old dope soaked mind remembers it quite well.
The big moves are now in Asia. Why should Russia waste her treasure and young men where there is nothing to be gained?
They’re not trying to “gain” anything. They’re trying to hold on to their naval base in Tartus (their only Mediterranean naval base) and their air base near Latakia. No matter where the “big moves” are at the moment, they’re not going to easily give up their Mediterranean and Middle East positioning.
It’s also worth noting that Russia and Turkey went to war 12 times between 1568 and 1923, that they have often-conflicting interests and might go to war again, and that if that happens a Russian threat from Syria would tie down Turkish forces which otherwise would be available for use further east.
They wouldn’t have to waste anything. Israel would back down from any threat that comes from someone who actually has real military capabilities.
“… who not identified as …” and then this website (no identified author or writer(s) of these
words) encourages a read to go to “The Times of Israel.” Why does the website fail to identify the “who” as “The Times of Israel?”
The very next sentence identifies “a” … “the” … “who” as “Russia,” which is a proper, abstract noun identifying a “country,” not even a newspaper, let alone a government or even a person or an undentifiedofficial.
Encouraging a read to click on the “who,” which is “The Times of Israel” is common practice on the website. Why? Its only purpose works to generate “clicks” or revenue for “The Times of Israel.”
Is the question of “who” ever in doubt?
As for Russia or the World’s reaction or concern for Israel violating the air space of a sovereign nation (Lebanon), to say nothing of the murderous non-defense attack or unprovoked response by Israel, it is the acknowledgement that is the land of “The Chosen People.”
More importantly, it is the acknowledgement that Israel is the United States and the United States is Israel.
As it was in the beginning, as it is now and as it always will be.
And, so it goes …
