Libya Unity Government Recovers Key Airbase From Hafter

Fighting continues in area near Tripoli

Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) claimed a major victory Monday, announcing the “liberation” of al-Wattiya airbase near Tripoli. The base has long been under control of Khalifa Hafter’s Libyan National Army (LNA).

This is not only a blow to Hafter, but a major loss for the LNA, as Wattiya was said to be one of the last holdings they had on the western Libyan coast. There is still fighting in the area, though images have confirmed GNA controls the base itself.

The GNA has made substantial gains in the coastal areas in recent weeks, pushing the LNA out of a lot of holdings and cutting their supply line close. It could be that the LNA will be forced back to its holdings in the east at this rate.

When the losses began, foreign backers of Hafter started sending extra aid to the LNA, but so far this doesn’t seem to mean much to the momentum, and despite all of the states behind Hafter, they don’t seem to be enough to secure him victory.
