Russia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement Wednesday warning the US against putting low-yield nuclear weapons on their submarines and using them, saying any use of a low-yield weapon against Russia would yield to a very full retaliation.
The US State Department has been pushing arguments to deploy such missiles as a way to counter Russia and China at sea, arguing that the submarines need low-yield nuclear options. They argue that having such weapons makes nuclear war less likely.
Russian officials, however, say that’s only the case if the US isn’t attacking people with those nuclear weapons, noting that Russia has a long-standing nuclear retaliation policy that would prescribe retaliation against a low-yield nuclear strike like any other nuclear strike.
That’s been the criticism since the US went down the path of developing new low-yield options. While officials argue that the lower yield lowers the threshold for use, many have warned all along that more usable nuclear arms will just make nuclear strikes more routine, and nuclear exchanges far more risky.
Nuclear deterrence only works if it can prevent the scenarios where nuclear weapons will have to be used – increasingly it can’t. The pattern of history predicts the war where they will be used.

Absolute Insanity.
getting vaporized on the first wave won’t be any fun. i want to see who wins.
“They argue that having such weapons makes nuclear war less likely.”
So if I brought a knife to a fistfight would I be less likely to use that knife than if I didn’t bring a knife to that fistfight? Our logic astounds.
russian nukes are so old and unusable they couldn’t take out a lemonade stand.
“… Officials argue that the lower yield lowers the threshold for use….” Isn’t that what critics say — that it makes war more likely by encouraging use of nuclear weapons? The Trump administration makes the illogical, opposite claim, that the “low-yield” bombs, or “battlefield” nukes, raise he threshold for use.
Bear in mind that these weapons are “low-yield” only in relation to present-day monsters. We have weapons that are thousands of times stronger than the bomb that Truman used to massacre the population of Hiroshima. Some nuclear experts have likened the power of “low-yield” weapons to the Hiroshima bomb.
paul,,”massacre”? You better study the history behind that bombing and of those times.
There are no better words no matter how hard he studies. The ultimate in massacres.
paul, there was no atomic bomb dropped on hiroshima or nagasaki. 59 planes or so took off on those nights and firebombed those cities into oblivion. there was no radiation lingering there. they say the wind was blowing out to sea and it carried the fallout away. folly, pure folly.
Covid has nearly destroyed the USA, can you imagine what a few nukes would do to this nation, the USA. Purge the DC Ghouls!
Money, of course. Low yield. How Orwellian. Liw yield of what or whom? Sounds like GOF, or Gain of Function. “Enhancing” viruses of Flu, MERS, and SARS, ti be more deadly. Dr. Fauci knows all about it, he authorized $3.7 mil to transfer research of bat enhanced virus back in 2015 to Wuhan. And then resumed in US in 2017.
I guess we all got the benefits of “enhancement”.
