Militia, families flee into government-controlled territory
The US had lost most of its Syrian rebel groups long ago, but Maghawir al-Thawra had remained, centered around al-Tanf. This rebel group too appears to be crumbling, with members and their families fleeing en masse into Assad government territory.
Tanf is a remote US-held corner of Syria near Iraq and Jordan, and with the US willing to attack anyone else in the area, became a haven for rebels who largely didn’t do anything but hang out with US arms at the border.
Even though the US war in Syria is supposed to just be about taking Syrian oil now, the US has remained in Tanf. The rebels, however, have begun defecting this week in high profile moves, taking US arms and vehicles and heading to Palmyra.
Instead of losing their last rebels, the US military is trying to rebrand this militia as drug smugglers, and claims they’re fleeing because the US wouldn’t let them get away with smuggling on Jordan’s border.
Good news !
“Instead of losing their last rebels, the US military is trying to rebrand this militia as drug smugglers, and claims they’re fleeing because the US wouldn’t let them get away with smuggling on Jordan’s border.”
But of course. The US only backs terrorist, ooops, I mean rebel groups that have the most upstanding citizens. They must adhere to stringent standards such as only using the sharpest of blades when chopping someone’s head off as to not appear inhumane and not do it with one whack.
What the article is not telling is that the groups the US trained are former ISIS fighters and now trained to sabotage, kill workers and destroy Syrian controlled gas and oilfields.
when we need something done we hire the best. isis fighters had some spare time on their hands and weren’t eligible for unemployment. they don’t care who they work for as long as they get paid. this will look good on their resume.
Imagine what Syria might be like today if the US hadn’t gone there uninvited to prop up a group of “rebels” who were trying to overthrow their own government.
we haven’t given up on taking out basher assad. i believe a tomahawk missle with his name on it will soon make an appearance on his sunday noon dinner table.
Who is this “we” you keep referring to as if with certain knowledge?
the leader of the free world. u.s.a. we are the world’s policemen. we decide when a regime change is warranted. in this case assad has gassed his own people and needs to be taken out. we have deemed that a sunday noon time when the entire family has just sat down to dinner would be the appropriate time to do it. it will send a message that we will not tolerate the savagery and butchery that he endorses.
… They’re not fleeing… they’re infiltrating…
Yeah, that;s the ticket…
