In a move seen as trying to placate Turkey, the State Department has issued a statement confirming that President Trump will not recognize the Armenian genocide, and that his position is unchanged since vague comments in April in which he called it an “atrocity” but stopped short of labeling it genocide.
Because Turkey is a NATO ally, the US historically has not publicly recognized the genocide, so as not to anger the Turkish government. Anger over Turkey’s invasion of northeast Syria has led the House and Senate to pass resolutions recognizing the genocide.
The resolutions are non-binding, and don’t oblige the president to either sign or recognize it. Turkey was still furious over the Senate’s vote and summoned the US Ambassador to protest over the vote.
Trump’s very public non-recognition after the vote is intended to keep Turkey from doing anything in retaliation, though with the US also advancing on sanctions against them for buying S-400 missiles, there will likely be more opportunities for US-Turkey relations to worsen.
But Donny Zion is all-in on the “holocaust” hustle.
Trump probably never heard about the Armenian genocide. Billionaire’s children have different priorities other than learning about history. There is all that pussy to grab.
I suppose we could recognize the genocide we may have committed against the American Indians . If this turns out to be true We should check his out first than see how this compares with the Armienian genocide
Well, have you committed any genocide against the American Indians, or haven’t you?
If I have, it must have been during a blackout drunk or something, because I surely don’t remember it.
True, of course, if grandpa steals $100, then gives it to you, it is still stolen money.
There were as many as 100 million indigenous people in Pre-Colombian America. I have ancestors who chased them west across the Mississippi River. I don’t feel guilt but I do acknowledge the monstrous mindset.
I assume I have ancestors who were involved in the genocide; but my ancestors aren’t me.
I also have ancestors from at least one (verifiably — Blackfoot) and possibly two (family claim — Cherokee) of the tribes that were victims of the (incomplete) genocide.
I certainly acknowledge the monstrous mindset, but I wasn’t one of the perpetrators, nor do I consider myself one of the victims (although my Blackfoot ancestor may have been — I don’t know the circumstances under which she was brought back to Missouri from the northwest as the wife of my white great-grandfather).
As to Turkey and the Armenian genocide, it’s unlikely that any of the perpetrators, nor many — if any — of the victims remain living. And certainly none of them are officials in the current regime in Turkey.
Therefore, the conflict puzzles me insofar as I see no reason for the existing Turkish regime to deny the genocide, or for other regimes to tar it with the genocide. It seems like an “acknowledge it, remember it with as much factual accuracy as possible, and get on with current affairs” situation from both sides.
There’s a stage in conflict resolution called “truth and reconciliation”. Sincere contrition is hopefully followed by growing respect. Otherwise it festers.
The Turkish yolk is still fresh in Mr. Bigly.
Did Dubya or Obama recognize the Armenian Genocide? Its not clearly stated.
