Anger among Hong Kong’s protesters has brought them into a contentious debate, engaged in mostly in online forums, on whether to focus on peaceful protests, or to engage in more vigilante-style action, particularly against security forces.
Early Hong Kong protests largely focused on sit-ins and other activities blocking daily life in the city. With many angry at the protesters, and publicly supporting police crackdowns, some protesters are openly advocating “settling matters privately.” This includes matching punches with punches when security forces get violent.
This isn’t just about fighting police, however, despite videos online of protesters tackling and clobbering them. People condemning protesters have been thrashed in the streets, while a cab driver who swerved into a group of protesters was dragged from his car and beaten bloody. Even a local actress seen as pro-police took a few punches.
As protesters’ demands grow, so does the sense among some that the Beijing government will never settle matters to their satisfaction, which is fueling the sense among them that they may just as well settle it themselves.
While the protesters say they hope that violence against security forces shows them they will be held “accountable” for what they do, it seems unlikely that the Chinese state will simply allow this large, important city to fall further out of control.
This is an uninformed post at the least. The strategy from the start was ‘marginal violence’ , which in practice was every form of non-lethal violence , to stop the economy and provoke a violent response. Not everyone participate s in that of course. But it was the plan from the start and as one of them told the NYtimes, it’s like playing Grand Theft Auto in real life.
The main problem they have is that the police avoids escalation, making it hard to get some form of international outrage going.
You’d be surprised how many ignorant people think there have been many deaths.
I’m not sure if you know the extent of the damage done and the extent of the violence commited by those shock troops.
I have a movie here of a demonstrator being shot in the leg by an off duty cop. On the one hand you could say that is one badass cop. He’s alone, he’s set on fire twice with petrol bombs, his car is destroyed, someone tries to run off with his gun, and he only uses the gun to shoot a kid in the leg when they are on top of him.
On the other hand you can say that is what is expected of him. Cops aren’t supposed to punish rioting with death.

You really wonder why Beijing hasn’t crushed these foreign-sponsored terrorists & rioters. The inscrutable Asian, eh, what?
Well, maybe YOU wonder about that. I don’t. They don’t crush the protests because crushing the protests would be bad for business, full stop.
If those protesting want a democratic government let them organize themselves and peacefully create a political party with elected officials that can represent the views of the majority. Destroying your own homeland is just plain stupid and accomplishes nothing positive.
In a democracy there are always winners and losers and we have to learn the art of compromise and when we are on the loosing side we don’t surrender we go back to the drawing board. Try to understand what Bejing is up against, the US is doing everything it can to bring China to its knees and openly admits that, do we think the world is better off with one superpower in control.
the ones getting arrested and sent to jail r hiding their face to protect their family from facing the resentment of public at large that shows how they r actually viewed by the general population of hongkong
This is all looking Color Revolution 2.0. When everyone in the establishment from Hillary Clinton to Marco Rubio are supporting these protests it really makes you wonder. Not to say I support the Chinese regime in the slightest but I’m not supporting the US regime either.
Agree this has “Color Revolution” printed all over it, but please remember it is not just US NGO’s but many a NATO allies that spread funds and urge both violent and peaceful actions.
It is they who propagandize about how great Democracy and how supportive US will be towards “democratic” regime changes in local government structures.
US authorities.led by Trumps “Great Wisdom”,.his tweet not mine, keeps warning about Hong Kong police violence and telling China not to send in military and escalate violence against demonstrators, the man is an egotistical moron.
If protesters were throwing Molotov Coctails upon police and citizens, burning stores, sabotaging train, subway, taxi and bus traffic here in states, the dead, dying, wounded and arrested would be filling both local jails, hospitals and morgues.
If they were black protestors in US the bodies shot by cops, who shoot and beat blacks for just looking at them wrong, their bodies would be stacked like cordwood in the streets.
Chinas major .weak point is Hong Kong, they have lots of less vulnerable to US and European Financial and NATO interventions, but Hong Kong is run as a Corporate/ Financial Center of International trade and has a lot of old British imposed restriction of neolibearlism whose leaders walk a fine line afraid of too much influence both by China and foreign interest.
So far China holds the high ground as to its humane reactions to the violence in Hong Kong, but what choice do they have, they are not threatening rest of world as does US to those who dare even mention US kills tens of thousands yearly and steals their resources.
He’ll police kill more unarmed Americans than US military loses in yearly combat zones.
They kill more unarmed Americans yearly than what so called ma’s killers have in total for last 25 years
In US the most discriminated race for college entrance.are.Asian Americans that as a group academicly far outdistance all other racial groupings, but due to females, Black and Hispanic Diversity quotas as minorities must let low IQ, IQ.less qualified take their places.
Hong Kong talk of democracy led by an American ass kissing dude who spends most of time galavanting around world on US and Euro money, are dumb as rocks to US reality.
