After meeting with his Finnish counterpart, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif reiterated that Iran is not interested in having direct talks with the United States at this time, though he did hold out the possibility of mediation.
Zarif also credited Europe for efforts to save the P5+1 nuclear deal,
saying he believes they are doing their best. At the same time, he said
the focus on dealing with the US should be bringing them back into the
existing deal.
That’s probably unlikely to happen, as President Trump has committed to
the idea that the nuclear deal was the worst thing ever, and as a
political matter has tried to connect it to President Obama.
On the other hand, withdrawing from the deal clearly hasn’t worked in US
efforts to end the nuclear deal entirely, and has cost the
administration the ability to take matters of enforcement to internal
mediation bodies.
Iran has to learn how to play Trump. Agree to talks. Let him change three comas and two “therefors” in the old agreement and let him put his name on it. Tell him he’s a stable genius and that he has a big Johnson and you will have a deal. Oh, and tell him Obama is an uppity you know what.
I like that one and second the motion, wars r u.s.
There won’t be any talks ever again. Trump and the neocons will figure out how to get a war started, and for the next thirty years there won’t be any talks because the US (and NATO, despite the EU wavering) will be bombing Iran and Iran will be keeping the Straits closed and bombing Saudi Arabia and US assets all over the region. It’s inevitable.
The enmity between the two countries will never be resolved as long as the US is in the hands of warmongers. And that won’t change until the US suffers a major military defeat somewhere – or WWIII destroys the US.
