Some Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, have
expressed support for the idea of a new round of talks with President
Trump, but are trying to condition it on the US pledging to make good on
previously promised sanctions relief.
Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad made the surprise move to endorse direct talks with President Trump on Friday, saying Trump is a businessman “and therefore he is capable of calculating cost-benefits and making a decision.”
Ahmadinejad went on to say that in talks, Trump could be made to see
that the long-term cost-benefit does not support the idea of a war, and
that he should not be shortsighted.
Ahmadinejad was Iran’s president from 2005-2013. He broadly ran as a
centrist within Iran, sparring with hardliners and Reformists. He’s been
critical of the current, Reformist government, and most recently has
gotten in some legal trouble for accusing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali
Khamenei of embezzling money.
Ahmadinejad was widely seen in the west as a hardliner. But hardliners can move to the centre, and moderates can move to the extreme. It is what is perceived to be in the national interest: that’s the deadly calculation.

In the West, every leader in Iran is portrayed as more or less a “hardliner”. How else could they be demonized?
If Iran agrees to talks they should put a copy of the JCPOA on the table and tell Trump to change a comma here and there and call it his deal while agreeing with him that Obama was a secret Muslim. Done deal.
The problem with the notion that Trump is a “deal maker” is that he is totally under the control of the Zionists in his family and advisers. He has no room to make any deals with Iran.
Also, while the short- and long-term economic consequences to the US of a war with Iran are bad, they are not bad for the military-industrial complex and the oil companies and they call the shots in the US, not Trump.
So a deal isn’t going to happen. War is inevitable.
I thought AJ had been executed for being an idiot back in the day. Good on him for talking sense these days though.
