There appears to be substantial misunderstanding around the world about
the specifics of the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran. The deal is not in any
real way about nuclear weapons, and when the deal was reached Iran had
no nuclear weapons program, and had for over a decade disavowed the very
idea of ever acquiring them.
Talk of Iran acquiring such a weapon has entirely been talk out of
Western hawks, and no matter how many times Iran reiterates that nuclear
weapons are in violation of religious law, the allegations continue.
Iranian FM Javad Zarif reiterated that matter again today, saying Iran “will never pursue a nuclear weapon.”
By contrast, Zarif pointed out that the US has nuclear weapons and has
actually used them in the past. He expressed surprise that President
Trump was worried about killing 150 people in an attack on Iran, asking
“how many people have you killed with a nuclear weapon?”
The P5+1 deal was always meant to govern Iran’s civilian nuclear
program, the only one they have, and which has no military dimension. At
present, Iran is enriching uranium to 3.6%, which is the level used in
an electricity-generating plant at Bushehr. This is the sum total of
Iran’s program.
While Iran has suggested specific commitments within the P5+1 deal may change,
since the US after all dishonored that treaty, this too would be
totally unrelated to militarization. Iran’s enrichment program is only
producing at very low civilian levels, and weapons-grade uranium is in
excess of 90%, far beyond Iran having shown the ability to even
approach, let alone produce.
And once again, Iran’s capacity to enrich uranium is neither here nor
there, since they have repeatedly disavowed ever having nuclear weapons
as a formal religious tenet, since 2003. President Trump promised to be Iran’s “best friend” if they’d only disavow such weapons.
Iran did so before Trump’s comments, and they’ve done so after. The
result from Trump was a solid day of threatening total obliteration.
How can Iran wipe Israel off the map ? If they don’t have nuclear weapons .
Waves of child soldiers, the same way they defended themselves from the US / Iraqi aggression years ago. Israel would respond with the nukes they pretend to not have… talk about not distinguishing oneself positively while putting a match to a million gallons of gasoline.
Wipe the regime from the page of time, or some sort, is more like what the leaders of Iran have been quoted as saying. You know, regime change. And since Israel has been goading the US to go to war with Iran for the last 25 years to do exactly that, what would you expect?.
For 42 years Iran has called for wiping Israel off the map by giving the vote to all the Palestinians in Israel, Gaza, the West Bank and the Palestinian refugees overseas. That would mean the end of the Zionist state and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons.
“There appears to be substantial misunderstanding around the world about
the specifics of the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran.”
No, there’s no “misunderstanding.” There are simply lies by those in power and total lack of comprehension on the part of the US electorate.
As I’ve mentioned before, the US electorate during Obama’s campaign believed Iran actually had nuclear weapons – not just a nuclear weapons program (which also didn’t exist.) This was the result of eight years of lies by Bush Jr. and another 8 years of lies by Obama, now being continued by 3 years of lies by Trump. Not to mention all of Netanyahu’s lies.
You can’t call this a “misunderstanding”. It’s properly called “brainwashing”.
Mmm, if no nukes is part of Sharia law, perhaps we could use some here in the US.
Hey Dave. I wouldn’t go around suggesting Sharia law. While we are a “free” country (remember the 1st Amendment?) Guantanamo is only 90 miles away.
Until yesterday I have held on to my arrogant suggestion that our government should return to 5+1 as is as a first step for detente with Iran. Why arrogant? Because it is based on the stupid assumption that Iran would be willing if not happy to return to 5+1 as is. I have been completely blind to the possibility that Iran is now actually moving towards a far more radical demand because it trusts neither us nor at least three of the remaining signers GB, France, and Germany. And Putin seems to be willing to accept any solution just to get Iran off his duplicitous back. Iran seems to be moving towards: no more 5+1; we will only accept the status of a normal NPR state without any sanctions. That is our opening condition for any talks.
The same arrogance and even worse was displayed at the Democratic debate last night when Iran was brought up. Booker, Gabbard, and Globuchar are as idiotic as I was.
WTF does “FM” mean?
