Pompeo and Rouhani Trade Barbs on Possible Talks

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday, the United States was willing to talk to Iran about their nuclear program with no preconditions, if Iran began to behave like a “normal nation.”

On Saturday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said Iran was willing to hold talks with Washington if they showed respect, Pompeo responded to those comments, “We are prepared to engage in a conversation with no preconditions. We are ready to sit down.” But Pompeo went on to say, “We are certainly prepared to have that conversation when the Iranians can prove that they want to behave like a normal nation.”

Rouhani responded to Pompeo’s latest comments on Sunday, “The other side that left the negotiating table and breached a treaty should return to normal state.”

The IAEA, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, recently reported that Iran continues to comply with the nuclear deal, the US pulled out of that deal over a year ago.
