Making his first overseas visit to a warzone on Wednesday in Iraq,
President Trump sought to downplay last week’s announced pullout from
Syria, saying it had been “overstated,” and that US troops could easily reenter Syria whenever he felt it was necessary.
In arguing that point, Trump said that the base he was visiting, in
western Iraq, could well serve as a base for future invasions of eastern
Syria, from which the US is about to extricate itself.
That base isn’t the only one, with Iraqi officials reporting to Turkish
state media that the US is in the process of setting up two new bases in
the far west of Iraq’s Anbar province, in al-Qaim and al-Rutbah, the two main border crossings into Syria.
Trump’s comments are likely intended to deflect the Congressional
backlash against the idea of not being at war with Syria, by arguing
that the US could easily choose to suck itself back into the war at any
moment.
What a wonderful idea! Let’s ensure we never leave anywhere and stay in every part of the world we have helped(!), for ever.
“Making his first overseas visit to a warzone on Wednesday in Iraq”
Warzone in Iraq! I thought we invaded and saved/liberated/democratized Iraq in 2003.
google, “we’ve seen the enemy and he is us”
And this man is supposedly a libertarian non-interventionist? Wow, Trumpsters, WOW!
If what he says it’s factually true about the pullouts and reduction, it will be the first president since Reagan and Nixon that has kept a promise and played a more noninterventionist part, so I’m not sure why are you seeking perfection from a president surrounded by D.C. hawks.
Perfection equals consistency? Either he’s a non-interventionist or he’s not. It’s not like he didn’t know about those DC hawks going in.
I don’t seek perfection from someone who is surrounded by cesspool, just step in the right direction.
Even falling is flying.
Erm, the ground troops hes pulling out, are troops he put in….
Actually most of those troops were stationed there under Obama and unlike other presidents he decided not to waste billions to keep them there for the next 17 years.
No, according to what the Pentagon says, Obama left office with 300- 500 spec ops in Syria, likely air spotters and security, the 3000 man marine artillery unit was brought in by trump in 2017. Likely, the 3-500 spec ops, or mercenary equivalents, will remain.
Shift in tactics, nothing more. Ignore everything the man says.
I remember Trump campaigning about how wrong we were to invade Iraq and now he’s talking about how we can re-enter Syria from our bases there. I guess going in was wrong but staying is ok.
What trump mostly said, was we should have more winning wars, and he was the one to show how. He knows more than the generals ya know.
I would have been disappointed had some early waffling not occurred.
Whatever happened with the US base they were building in Syria?
Ask the Pentagon accounting office…………;*)
There is such a thing?
….And here’s the catch!
With a NATO allie invading just across the border, how long do you think it will take for Uncle Sam to have to come to the rescue. Even if Trump genuinely wants out (who Knows?), the Pentagon will have easy access to a bevy of Gulf-of-Tonkin scenarios to choose from. Bad mojo. Real bad mojo.
