Speaking on Tuesday, President Trump again threatened to withdraw from the P5+1 nuclear deal with Iran. Trump previously set an ultimatum of May 12 for withdrawing if the deal isn’t changed substantially. Trump also threatened to make Iran “pay a price like few countries have ever paid.”
The May 12 deadline is when President Trump would have to extend sanctions relief from the deal. Without that, the US would effectively be withdrawing. Iranian officials have made clear if that happens, they’ll resume uranium enrichment they’d stopped under the pact.
The three EU parties to the deal have been trying to come up with a sideline agreement with the US to prevent all this. So far, President Trump appears unwilling to budge. French President Emmanuel Macron appeared to join Trump in opposing the deal’s continuation, backing a joint statement from the two calling the current deal “insane.”
If this is actually Macron’s position, it’s a dramatic change. Previously, all other P5+1 parties and Iran supported the deal as written, and viewed it as working very successfully. The US was the only nation where substantial opposition existed.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif was unimpressed with the US threats to withdraw sanctions relief, noting the US has been violating the terms of the deal in any case. Iran has ruled out renegotiating the deal to give the US what it views as more favorable terms, again, on the grounds the US wasn’t respecting what they’d negotiated in the first place.
“pay a price like few countries have ever paid”. What? More fire and fury? Not only does Trump want to back out of the deal, he sounds like he’s threatening Iran with the very weapons we don’t want them to have. I’m so fu**ing sick of this a$$hole.
If trump pulls out, Iran may have no choice but to nuclearize.
If Trump does not pull out Iran goes nuclear in a few years any way , that’s the deal , Iran gets nuclear weapons with this deal .
No, 10 years. Before they can start building weapons.
Iran complied with the conditions of NPT, but that wasn’t good enough.
CIA and Mossad reported that if Iran ever had a nuclear weapons program, it had been shut down no later than 2004, but that wasn’t good enough.
The US started making demands of Iran above and beyond its NPT obligations, and for years, every time Iran agreed with those demands, the US said that wasn’t good enough and changed the demands.
The US FINALLY decided it was getting everything it wanted, above and beyond the fact that Iran was in compliance with its NPT obligations and above and beyond the fact that it didn’t have a nuclear weapons program anyway, and made a deal.
And has been whining ever since that it’s a bad deal under which Iran will suddenly and magically get the nuclear weapons program it didn’t have in the first place.
iran is a signatory of the NNPT (nuclear nonproliferation treaty) and has stated many times that they have no desire to possess or proliferate nuclear arms. being a signatory of the NNPT as well, the US is required to assist iran in building a peaceful nuclear power plant industry.
israel on the other hand, not only refuses to sign the NNPT, but actually sells illegal nuclear weapon technology to the highest bidder.
Iran is part of NNpT, Iran is a nice kid with short trousers blah blah…
They crossed the line when they stopped taking the dollar as measurement currency, interfered in Syria, Iraq and most importantly stood up to the heelie’s aggression. It doesn’t have IMF master or owe money to IMF.
ha. you say that like you mean it.
I think we already helped Iran build a nuclear facility and Russia helped them build another one . It was our turn to sell them the next facility But Russia got the next sale too . That when we got mad at Iran .and those tricky Russians . If we keep on doing what we have been doing Iran will be in the same position as North Korea is in today .
Trump’s decision is a forgone conclusion. It was made by Sheldon Adelson two years ago.
