The results of the Iraqi Kurdistan referendum on secession are in, with over 92% of the voters in favor of seceding from Iraq. Iraq’s Prime Minister Hayder Abadi has threatened military action in retaliation.
In fact, Abadi is now demanding that the Kurds totally cancel the vote, even though it’s already taken place and the results are already in, saying he will “never discuss” the results of the referendum because Iraq’s parliament didn’t give them permission for it.
Iraqi officials seem to be throwing everything at the situation in Kurdistan now and seeing what sticks. Demands for the Kurds to surrender their airports have been spurned, and Kurdish officials had ruled out returning to Baghdad’s rule before Abadi’s latest demands were even made.
Abadi’s threats are getting increasingly bellicose, however, ruling out any negotiation and vowing to “impose Iraq’s rule” in all parts of Kurdistan, amid reports both Iran and Turkey are negotiating to get involved in an anti-Kurdish war.
Both Turkey and Iran have Kurdish minorities, and both fear having their own secessionist movements as a spillover from this vote. At the same time, a general war against Kurds seems likely to exacerbate tensions internally for all nations involved.
Where the US is going to end up remains anyone’s guess, as the Trump Administration has come out against Kurdish secession, but their long history of supporting the Iraqi Kurds likely precludes endorsing a regional war against them to prevent their self-determination.
Well, I don’t know if our history of supporting and using the Kurds precludes anything. Most of our history consists of bombing nations that were on our side until we decided to make them our enemies.
But in fact the US is noticeably absent from the forces trying to squash Kurdistan RIGHT NOW, so maybe we’ve just forgotten our normal betrayal. Too busy fighting over statues and football.
The other snag is that the US hasn’t finished using the Kurds against ISIS, so it would be ahead of schedule to throw them under the bus now.

The Kurds have been pumped up to take a flying leap from a high cliff. They are giddy from the wild encouragement of those who will not be jumping with them.
Those says, “do it, do it” are likely to profit. Our war hawks use the Kurdish militia for its projects. The Israelis use the Kurdish project to disrupt the neighborhood in the same way as did the Syria War now winding down, and to hem in Iran. It has nothing to do with any benefit or justice to the Kurds.
We saw from President Wilson actions after WW1 that a multitude of small powerless ethnic countries isolated and at risk is not good for even those ethnic groups so pleased at first with their newfound independence, and it is very bad for the rest of the world for the trouble that ensues for everyone, most of all for those isolated vulnerable ethnics.
Because the US Deep State hates and dispises democracy and concepts like a government needing the consent of the governed. And certainly in the US Empire, no puppet state is going to tolerate any democracy except the fake kind.
Remember, Abadi is PM because the US insisted that his predecessor be removed and then the US approved Abadi as the next PM under the Constitution that the US wrote for Iraq (in English, which then needed translation to Arabic.)
Around the world, the US consistently opposes two ideas…. peace and democracy.
Lets look around the world and what do we see…..
The US Deep State has overturned the most recent American election where the people voted for no more regime change wars and an America first policy.
The US Deep State has ignored a referendum in Crimea where 90% of the people voted to say they did not want to be ruled by US fascist puppets in Kiev. The US is so upset at this that its pushing the world closer and closer to nuclear war. This after the US Deep State overthrew the elected govt of Ukraine in favor of their facist puppets.
The US Deep State somehow claims that Venezuela was attacking democracy by following its constitution that says when the government is deadlocked it should go to the people and hold an election for a new assembly. Again, the US is threatening war because Venezuela let its people vote.
The US is opposed and Trumppett has called “foolish” the upcoming referendum which the Spanish police are trying to crush with raids and occupations.
The US Deep State opposed the notion of Britains getting vote to decide whether to stay in an anti-democratic EU, and has since complained about “brexit”.
The US has long supported war crimes against Gaza because the people there elected the ‘wrong’ party.
The US has insisted that even though Assad has the support of some 70% of the Syrian people, that Assad still must go in favor of unpopular ISIS and Al-Qaida jihadists.
The US overthrew the democratically elected government of Egypt because the Egyptians elected the wrong party.
The US overthrew the democratically elected government of Honduras because the elected President wanted to hold a non-binding referendum on whether to keep the Constitution written by a previous US backed military junta.
The US has interfered with elections around the world trying to rig them to elect their chosen people. Notable examples include the post-WW2 elections in western Europe and trying to interfere with the Russian Presidential election that returned Putin to office.
—-Only limited, corporate media controlled elections that are guaranteed to elect candidates favorable to the Deep State are tolerated.
I bet if the Kurds agree to give Iraq all of the oil they might let them go . I bet they will let all the Kurds move to Syria too . It is always about money
