Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev issued a statement today criticizing US airstrikes against Syria, saying attacks on the airbase were illegal and brought the US “one step away from military clashes with Russia.”
President Trump had been warning against Syrian airstrikes for years before coming to power, warning it could lead to World War 3 with Russia. There is growing concern on that front, as the two nations already had very bad relations, and Medvedev warned today the US-Russia ties were “completely ruined” after the attack.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has called for a meeting with his security council on Friday to discuss the US attacks, and potential Russian reprisals. Already, Russia is promising additional air defenses for Syria, and deploying ships into the region.
Russia also cut off the “deconfliction” communications with the US military to protest the attacks, which Kremlin officials are warning significantly increases the threat of military conflict. Russian officials are warning US strikes are benefiting ISIS and other rebel factions.
The centerpiece of President Trump’s foreign policy at election was the normalization of ties with Russia, and despite understanding all too well that yesterday’s attacks would likely ruin that goal, he ordered the attacks anyhow. Where US-Russia relations are going from here is unclear, but it will be hard to see them going in a positive direction any time soon.
If this remains the one-off event it seems now, it is nothing more than a re-boot of something that was not running smoothly anyway.
It will change the anti-Russian hysteria of our Team Hillary die hards, and it will sober up both Trump’s team and Putin’s about the need to get serious.
Putin was already very serious about Syria and in fact was closing in on peace.
Russia has stated very clearly that Syria is a ‘binary’ situation in which the Syrian government is fighting terrorism. Adopting that train of thought would go a long way to you being able to understand better.
There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the US is going to allow Syria to slip out of it’s grasp. It will not remain a one-off event.
But there is an awakening going on with the American people that could gain legs. It’s a longshot but at least it’s hope.
I expect that Trump’s regime won’t waste too much time and allow the antiwar movement to gain any ground.
It stop any investigations and Hillary has nothing to do with it, Orange Jesus Davidian.
Why would president Trump suddenly abandon his attempt to foster more friendly relations with Russia? Beats me. He will probably return to that theme after a period of muscle showing and saber rattling. Or has he already switched from Putin to Xi?
Of course the meeting with Xi was “enormously successful” because everything in Trumpland is always enormously successful. Unless there is some secret agreement hammered out with China on North Korea, the S. China Sea, trade, and the Yuan Renminbi there is very little if any substance to show for this pow-wow at Mar-a-Lago.
America have been tormenting this conflict Since it started with a small group was given as much military equipment to cause civil war and overthrow assad
