With a veto override vote scheduled for Wednesday in the Senate, Defense Secretary Ash Carter is doing some last minute public lobbying against the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act (JASTA), which previously passed unanimously in both the House and Senate.
JASTA would allow the families of victims of the 9/11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for its role in supporting plotters in the lead-up to the attack. President Obama vetoed the bill Friday, claiming other nations could reciprocate and that it would open taxpayers up to lawsuits for America’s own misdeeds internationally.
Carter’s opposition to JASTA took a different tack, arguing that a lawsuit against Saudi Arabia over 9/11 would lead to “an intrusive discovery process,” and ultimately lead to the public disclosure of “American secrets,” potentially damaging the terror war.
While this is in keeping with the administration’s obsession to keep myriad secrets (after all, the 28 pages disclosure on Saudi involvement in 9/11 only became public in a heavily redacted form after a protracted effort), it also seems to amount to an admission that America has more secrets that would be relevant in the case against the Saudis.
Exactly what that would be, or even where it would come from, is unclear, as while there were considerable redactions within the 28 pages, none of them gave the appearance of providing any US ties to any of the pre-9/11 shenanigans.
The Senate’s vote will be Wednesday on the override, and assuming it passes the House is expected to vote later in the week. The House is widely assumed to have the votes, while the Senate is expected to be closer, though advocates in both parties have suggested they believe they can override the veto. Those wishing to contact their senators at the last minute in support of JASTA can find contact information here.
Gotta love this guy… “Lawsuit could lead to an INTRUSIVE discovery process…” Yaa, we wouldn’t want to intrude on our Saudi pals… After all, the suicide pilots were not Really their citizens… No just high tech manaquins.. And all those Saudis in Sarasota who vanished a few days before nine 11 leaving behind luxury cars were just after the girls…. If you’received interested and have a little time… go to http://www.madcowprod.com You could read the latest story about “The Donald” there, but if you scroll down you will find the archives.. go to March 2003 and Daniel has a bit about Atta and the Royal Family…. Daniel has been working that patch since IT happeded… Those archives have veins of conspiratorial gold… He has their number, and you can find it in there too. Just don’t tell too many people…
The work of Daniel Hopsicker is in my opinion amoung the most important investigative work into 9/11. I read TerrorLand twice and studied that book very very deeply. Everything checks out and Hopsicker has been dramatically vindicated twice. In 2012 Rudi Dekkers was busted holding 87 lbs of coke, as reported by ABC News (with absolutely no follow up to the story, was he indicted, convicted etc etc….nothing). in Hopsickers late 2003 book there was a chapter called ‘Rudi The Crook’. Dekkers was the owner (on paper anyway, but that’s another story) of Huffman Aviation where Atta and Al Shehee (I know that is a misspelling), the two patsies they say flew into the towers, trained. One of the best books I have ever read.
People like you invent far too many conspiracy theories and live in movieland more than in reality. That’s got a lot to do with your fascination with Trump the phony and the reason why your country couldn’t come up with a sane alternative to Hillary.
Now you’ll suffer the consequences of Clinton unless the American people can break free from their comatose propagandized state and cause the politicians to act responsible. Unfortunately, there’s not a chance for years to come by the looks of it. A real antiwar candidate couldn’t muster much more than 10% support.
Ah, the Hillary troll is back.
Of course, it ignores that if the Dems had held an actual free and fair election to choose its nominee that Bernie would have been the winner. But, Dems in general and Hillary-trolls in particular join the SecDef in their absolute hatred of democracy.
Suggesting that I support Hillary Clinton just doesn’t pass muster anymore. I’ve soundly condemned her as a warmonger who offers no hope to your country. But at the same time I can see that Trump is even worse. He seems to be nothing but an insane egoist who who wants his ego stroked more than anything. Wasn’t the debate enough to tell you all that he’s not serious about anything? Can’t you see that you’re all being taken in by a showman?
It’s time to be thinking in terms of real hope and change. Sadly, the most likely way to that is in biting the bullet and seeing the warmonger Clinton be your next president. Then maybe, the work can begin on trying to convince the huge majority of your fellow Americans that peace is the way to prosperity. Your current politicians aren’t going to bring that for you, you’ll have to change the American mindset and learn to elect some that will.
It’s not the fault of the politicians. They only do the bidding of the people. It’s the people’s fault for directing the politicans to do what they are asked. Politicians will always do that because it is their whole wellbeing that demands it.
That’s got a lot to do with your fascination with Trump the phony and the reason why your country couldn’t come up with a sane alternative to Hillary. Now you’ll suffer the consequences of Clinton….

Actually I was for Bernie and now I am for Jill. I would not vote for either HRC or DT …no matter what, ….you idiot!
And as for ‘conspiracy theories’, Hopsicker’s book avoids advocating any theories. What he did was document a blizzard of facts that were omitted from or in tension with the nonsense that is The 9/11 Commission Report.
However because people like you, who have read neither like to talk out their assholes, you can go blow me.
At least Jill Stein has called for a new 9/11 investigation because the first one was so obviously a cover-up.
The man who introduced Trans Things into the military while making new wars every week is worrying about a lawsuit.
The last thing these guys need is to expose to the American public – the voting public – and provide them the wake-up call about what it is exactly our government does in our name when the press is conveniently absent or in docile servitude to the Pentagon. It just might interrupt the gravy train to Alexandria.
The next tactic by this cretin will be to declare that our “heroes” will be put in extreme danger from those who would want to do our troops harm by providing incentives to attack them where they are stationed in foreign lands. Disregarding, of course, that the government policy of putting them in places they don’t have any business being – they’re NOT protecting our “freedoms” – quite the opposite, of course, doesn’t matter to the policy makers.
Lions and tigers and bears, Oh My!!
????????????????????????????….?????
This bill allows much more than lawsuits against Saudi Arabia.
It enables “lawfare” more generally. It would allow the many lawsuits the Israelis have been bringing here against the Palestinians and anyone who helps them. It would throw open the court doors to the idea much more widely.
That is why it is being so widely supported. Saudi Arabia is only the beginning.
It is being opposed for the same reason, because US conduct, and the conduct of US friends, would also be open. THAT could get very embarrassing, since we and our friends have been disregarding all law with a presumption of impunity for a couple of decades now.
Funny, the USGov just LOVED the lawsuits that blamed the Iranians and tried to charge them damages for 9-11. But, when the Saudis and their oil money are involved, suddenly the petrodollar leeches scream and shout about order and how this opens the door to more lawsuits just like the ones the same people loved against Iran.
“We thought we’d elected an anti-war president in 2008, or at least that’s what he campaigned as”
If you think that’s what he campaigned as, you weren’t paying attention.
Sep 26, 2016 Why The Heck Are We Still in Afghanistan?
15 years later, the US and its NATO allies still have troops in Afghanistan with no plans on leaving. We were told this was about 9/11 and Osama Bin Laden, but these were lies. So why are the troops still there? What was the war in Afghanistan really about? Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization joins us to explain.

How can we take conspiracy theory wingnuts like you seriously Lincoln? You don’t even understand that the steel in the WTC didn’t have to melt, it only had to get to cherry red hot to collapse the twin towers. Don’t you think you should own up to your ignorance?
While I agree that the 9-11 conspiracy crowd is a bunch of nutters, he still asks a very good question. …… Why are we still in Afghanistan?
We thought we’d elected an anti-war president in 2008, or at least that’s what he campaigned as, but instead we got several Dubya-like ‘Surges’ to keep the Afghan war going and going and going and the blood flowing and flowing and flowing. Vote Hillary if you love war, bloodshed, death, destruction and torture and you want 4 more years of more and more and more of this.
Lots of people still ask serious questions and they will continue to do so. But here I’ve given you the opportunity to shoot down this conspiracy theorist wingnut and perhaps bring down his co-conspirators too. Why not get with me on the cause and make something positive happen on this site. Don’t all sane people want to be able to move on from their bullshit nonsense and make time for more reality?
The crazy fu–er has been had for what he is and he can’t run from it now. Help me to finish it off and maybe then we won’t have to suffer the craziness anymore for a while.
Your points deserve a fair and reasonable response, and I’ll be here to do it. But please, let’s deal with the issue in front of you now. We have lots of time to discuss the pros and cons of both Hillary and Trump.
Unfortunately Don G. there is abundant and multiple evidence that steel did melt. NYC Firefighters said so. Testimony before a congressional committee said so. The FEMA report of May 2002 said so. Photographs of red/orange metalic liquids flowing out the side of the tower and crains heaving up steel beams dripping red orange confirm it. The fact is steel did melt even though a hydrocarbon fire cannot melt steel.
Nice try. Why don’t you learn the facts before you make a complete ass of yourself.
I want to add to what I just wrote.
The RJ Lee report documents also says so and the US Geological Survey also says so. Both document the iron microsperes in the 9/11 dust which can only mean steel melted. Neither report offers an explaination for what melted the steel.
You can read the details at http://www.consensus911.org/point-tt-6/ with links to all the source material………but since you don’t read, perhaps other with brains in thier heads, unlike you will look at this information.
Come on Lincoln, you’re going to look like a coward until you can admit that you have been taken in by wingnut conspiracy theories. The sooner you come clean, the sooner you will be able to gain some credibility. The steel in the twin towers didn’t need to melt, it only had to get cherry red. You know that now so just admit your mistakes.
Hmmmm so terrible that the US “misdeeds” might be held accountable by other countries we’ve violated. Does the president not understand how shady and stinky this makes the US look? Plus chickens coming home to roost maybe, is that the problem? The basic message from Ashton is we better not dig too hard or the fairy story of them hijackers could come unraveled??? Get on with that veto, Congress, right away!
HooRAH!..
So, the SOD came out and publicly said that Saudi involvement in 9-11 is a state secret that can not possibly be told to the citizens of a democracy that is asked to send its tax dollars and the blood of its children so the SOD can spend both in a war where we are allied with the worst human rights abuses in the world. Very interesting.
Translation: I’m looking forward to my next career. It will likely be working for a big Merchant of Death, and these days the Saudis are one of the biggest purchasers of Weapons of Death. So, for the sake of my future employers and my future bonus checks, please don’t pass this bill.
— soon to be a rich, former SOD.
Time to drop this whole ridiculous charade about the huge GWOT scam. We have to be nice to the supporters of the terrorists in order to fight the terrorists?
Now, I wonder what on earth the US could have done that makes Obama think the US could be sued for? According to his own State department mouthpiece, the US is only engaged in charitable work and is busy saving lives worldwide….
This is a distraction. The BBC reported the collapse of WTC building 7 twenty seven minutes before it happened. The BritishCrown/N.A.T.O. was behind 911. The pentagon has pledged itself permanently to serve the British Crown/N.A.T.O. . They are traitors to the American Revolution of 1776.
Try to dispute that.
“They are traitors to the American Revolution of 1776.”
The Revolution of 1776 was overthrown in the counter-revolution of 1787.
