Fresh off of his victory in the Canadian elections, Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau has confirmed speaking with President Obama and informing him that he would be going through with a campaign promise to withdraw warplanes from the US-led war against ISIS.
Canada had previously committed CF-18 fighter jets to the war through March 2016, and while it’s unclear the exact date of Trudeau’s end, the suggestion is that it will be before that date. He did, however, say trainers would stay in Iraq, but not the ground troops involved in combat missions.
Trudeau had made ending the combat mission against ISIS a centerpiece of his campaign, and the Conservatives campaigned heavily against him on this point, including campaign videos using clips of ISIS propaganda videos interspersed with Trudeau’s comments.
Analysts see the election as in large measure a referendum on Canadian foreign policy, with outgoing PM Stephen Harper representing a more aggressive Canadian policy, eagerly participating in US-led adventures the world over, while Trudeau favors a return to a more humanitarian focus.
Revelations in recent months that Canadian warplanes were accused of killing dozens of civilians in Iraq, and that the defense ministry had tried to cover those incidents up, likely added to growing opposition to the war, and Trudeau seems to want to make it very clear his promise to end it wasn’t an empty campaign pledge, but a sincere statement of policy.
It's not just a rejection of Herr Harper's foreign policy and kissing Uncle Sam's butt. The election is a repudiation of his entire government and M.O. People are sick of the endless scandals, lies, corruption, lack of transparency, and ham-fisted authoritarianism.
Most of all, people were absolutely horrified when his campaign announced the creation of a "Barbaric Cultural Practices Snitch Line". Funny how no one gets upset when Christian women wear wedding veils or Christian nuns wear habits and long robes.
I'd like to report Herr Harper for the barbaric practice of killing civilians from 30,000 feet.
If Canada can do it, so can USA, come we must get organized.
One needs to understand that if every country participate in bombing Isis positions in Syria there wouldn't be Isis for Russian to bomb the hell out of these barbarians. So, what the new Canadian government is doing is what they haven't done to began with.
If the bombardment of Isis was performed to its outmost bombing of these barbarians, by now, there wouldent be any Isis left, so by Canadian new government withdrewing its jets from bombing Isis nothing is changed.
Good. The empire of neocon knucklehead foreign policy is coming to an end. Next: America.
Good-bye and good riddance to Harper!
As an American I am jealous. The Canadians have always been ahead of us. I know as I live next door.
Perhaps Mr. Trudeau would consider running in the USG
Presidential dog and pony show scheduled for Nov. 2016.
Nuttyahoo and AIPAC have already asked their flunkies in
Congress to put Canada Number 3 on its list of terrorist
regimes behind the USG and Israel.
The Canadians are needed primarily to defend against Putin accross the Arctic. That's a war that can be won. The fight against ISIS is a surefire loser. A state party never wins a war against an insurgency, particularly where the state party is a foreig country operating on the insurgents' home ground. The presence or absence of a small country like Canada changes nothing one way or the other and since Putin is hell-bent on getting himself bogged down in Syria, there's no point in wasting Canadian forces!
I'll believe it if and when it actually happens.
Good on him, and the Canadians!
Good bye to a jack ass whose security policies were a tissue thin disguise for bigotry.
When we see Syrian and Iraqi refugees streaming through southern Europe we see fathers, mothers and children desperate to escape mayhem and death. Only bigots like Harper saw a "security threat". When I see pictures and films of the ghettos and death camps I see fathers, mothers and children. Nazis were the only ones that saw members of an international Zionist conspiracy.
I don't need the type of security Harper promised.
That easy 'eh? Keeping promises, what a concept.
Let’s follow Canada and stop the bloodshed in world.
