Having gone out of his way, during the course of his reelection campaign, to alienate the Obama Administration, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu now has to face the danger of isolation at the UN.
Violating umpteen UN resolutions on any given day, and overtly violating the Geneva Conventions on the treatment of occupied territory, Israel has long relied on US vetoes to avoid any serious repercussions at the UN Security Council.
That veto may no longer be guaranteed, at this point, though US officials are being a bit coy about exactly where they stand. Former officials say the US position on future UN Security Council resolutions will depend heavily on the language.
The increasing political nature of US-Israeli ties mean that any non-veto will provoke outrage among Republicans, though the administration can probably get away with it more easily if the resolution itself is comparatively moderate.
That might not be too hard. UN Security Council resolutions on Israel have long been carefully moderated to try to coax the US into accepting a call for a peace deal they’ve claimed to support at any rate. Historically, that’s not mattered, as the vetoes come as a matter of course. Now those resolutions may be seen as practice for a serious round of serious resolutions.
Its about time we reign in this rogue apartheid state.
Yes. And I'm sure let's implement force against another country through an international organization like the UN. Sounds exactly like an "anti-war" activist to me.
I hope this time one does not have to ¨follow the money¨, as you Americans say
Nutty Yahoo (knows) the UN Security Council is a joke. If it wasn't, this
war criminal would be spending the rest of his life in prison.
Should the US decide to drop its auto-veto it will probably be partnered with a sub rosa agreement with either Cameron's UK or Hollande's France to fill in the role. Do not expect a Eureka! moment. More likely the Three Stooges [Obama, Cameron, and Hollande] will play a shell game and you will never see the pea.
This will be an impossible trifecta to achieve – it will require courage from Obama, intelligence from the GOP, and principle from the Democrats. Three ingredients not to be found on this Earth.
I reiterate…this is all pipe dream and sugar high UNTIL the USG actually does something besides insinuate and allude.
I reiterate…this is all pipe dream and sugar high UNTIL the USG actually does something concrete besides insinuate and allude. However, I suspect nothing will change.
The risk to Israel in this is not just of new resolutions. Israel is already subject of and in violation of about two score resolutions. Simple enforcement of what was already decided would be enough to bring sanctions down on Israel of the same sort as on Iran and N Korea.
Europeans, Russia, and maybe China too would all welcome that. Russia and China would like it more to discomfit the US for its own abuses of sanctions as for any concern about Israel.
The US is isolated, not just Israel. As Kerry said a year ago, the US is becoming unable to help Israel. If it is unwilling to use the veto, the tide would come in.
let us hope such tide is high enough to cleanse all the flotsam.
Don't expect to see any changes, because in reality, Israel controls the US government through the Federal Reserve banking system, which is controlled by the Rothschilds, who, in turn owe final loyalty to Israel.
